The gaudiest displays are not my cup of tea. I like simple and understated.

We have a tradition with our kids of driving around town to check out the houses. The kids will call out "Tacky Alert" when we see a particularly egregious one!

Interesting choice of names. The last Hazel I knew was my great-aunt, born in the 1890s. Perhaps if Julia and Danny have another daughter, they'll name her Myrtle or Bertha, just to keep that old-fashioned thing going. As for Phinnaeus, I at first confused that with Phileas Fogg, the David Niven character in "Around the World in Eighty Days." Close enough! Had the twins been boys, she could have had Phil and Phin!

The wreath is up, but that's the extent of the Christmas decor so far. Every year I debate whether to put up a tree, as it's just the two of us, no chilluns, and I never seem to have the time to devote to decorating it properly. *sigh* Maybe this year ...

Don't feel bad Mae, wreaths will be the only festive decor on my house also. Mr. B used to get really crazy with lights when the kids were small, not so much anymore. He does get the bug each time we pass a neighbors house down the street though. They have a palm tree in their front yard and they put red lights all over the trunk, white lights at the top and green lights on the fronds. It looks very cool.

I have the tree up. 2 Granddaughters decorated it while their Mom took their little brother to the Dr on Friday.

Also have the Chrystal Trees on the bombe' chest in the front entry.

I can't remember where I put the tree skirt, so the tree has no petticoat. I may have to put a white tea towel around it for the time being.

The fall decorations are still up outside. I need to take the scarecrow down today and at least get the wreath up.

I need to do the mantle (I'm short one sock, due to arrival of new gc & am having trouble finding one to match the others) and slap the garland up on the Stairway railing.

Tomorrow I fly out to DC for a week long meeting, so it will be awhile before I get the rest of it done.

The Osbourne family Christmas light display is now a tradition at Disney World. They were ordered to take it down in their hometown of Little Rock six years ago.

Meet the Osbournes.

The old timey names might be a new hip trend, another celeb recently named her new daughter Ethel. Just one more reason I'm glad I'm square.

May you not be a person of interest to the Homeland Gropers.

Thanks!

Sounds like you all have a great group with interesting things to discuss.

I've done a lot of decorating and cooking for a living. It sort of gets in your blood.

"The fall decorations are still up outside. I need to take the scarecrow down today and at least get the wreath up."

I was just saying to myself yesterday "Self" (Emeril) you need to take the pumpkin mailbox cover off and find the Christmas themed cover.

I found Martha Stewart bell wreaths last year on K-Mart.com for $4.00. I have Thomas Paconi tree decorations from QVC. My Santa collection takes up a lot of space. but love it! I sold my Dickens Village collection two years ago because I got tired of lugging it around and setting it up. We used to live down by the beach where a lot of tourists passed by on their way to the boat parade, so I would set them up on a tall open bookshelf facing out which was always the hit of the street. I really miss all that!

FYI:

AT THE START of 2003, an impressive effort to govern globalization got underway: The international diamond trade, which had fueled civil wars and international crime, became subject to a regulatory system backed by the United Nations and known as the Kimberley Process. An unlikely alliance of governments, the diamond industry and constructive nongovernmental organizations united behind two simple ideas: Freshly mined diamonds should be sealed in registered containers that certify their country of origin, and diamond importers should not accept unregistered gems that might profit insurgents or criminals. Diamonds from conflict areas have sustained guerrillas in Liberia, Congo, Angola and Sierra Leone; they are thought to form part of terrorist financial networks.

Do you mean that people stood outside your window and peered in at your Dicken's Village? That would make me uncomfortable. Strangers peering in my windows isn't something that makes me feel good.

I plan on arriving at the airport early. If the Grooper is young and good looking I will go outside for a cig and insist on being Grooped a second time! :>)

Yes people did look through the window at the house display, but it was the front living room where we did not spend time at night. When you live by the beach that's sort of something everyone does. Almost everyone who lived on the main street or the boardwalk area decorated their living rooms with various fabulous Christmas designs for people to see.

It definitely is the place to go at Christmas for a nice stroll looking at Christmas decorations and then the fabulous boat parade. Usually strolling carolers, a very festive atmosphere.

Thanks again for the welcome, I am really looking forward to the HGTV tour of the White House decorations. I loved the segment last year where Barney was 'helping' lol.

One year my husband put flashing lights around all the windows on the front of the house. Our neighbor came over and said he'd like to order a pizza!!

We went outside and took a good look at it, and he was right. It looked like a pizzeria. You can have too much of a good thing.

He never did that again.
