So sorry to hear about your dog. What a terrible way to start the holiday.
We had only my Mom here yesterday. We sorta agree on politics. Her only big issue is abortion and I'm very glad she feels so strongly about it because her marriage was failing when I was born but she had me anyway.
As for food, I didn't do anything homemade, I've been in charge of Thanksgiving dinner since I was 21 and I'm done.
Only exception to that was pumpkin pie. Thats my fave and it has to be homemade. Is pumpkin pie just a New England thing? Do others make it too? Sorry if thats a stupid question.

I doubt pumpkin pie is just a New England thing.......it seems to be a universally American thing.....for everyone but me. I do not like it and so I do not make it. I let others make it or else I buy it. My husband (born in Mass) and my daughter (born in Delaware) love it.

I was born in Texas and am now living in Oklahoma. Even though I don't really care for pumpkin pie, I make it every year just as my parents did when I was growing up.
I love cornbread stuffing so that's my favorite. I made enough to feed an army so have plenty of leftovers. I'm reheating the ham now and will throw in the stuffing shortly. I don't want the bird to dry out so I'm not going to re-heat it.

We love pumpkin pie here in North GA. Make one every year with whip cream on top.

Pumpkin pie is hugely popular throughout the Great Lakes region as well. Pumpkin anything, in fact. Pumpkins grow much better in the north than down south, so we Yankees have the advantage of fresh,
cheap pumpkins.
This year, after cutting out all of the cooking flesh from the pumpkins, we left the husks outside (meant to take them to the composter, forgot). The squirrels ate the husks. Devoured them. You would not believe how fat our squirrels are. They waddle.
