Because the Russians (Stalin) committed genocide on the Ukranian people in the 1920s and 30s, decimating the population. After cleansing the region, ethnic Russians moved in to occupy, overwhelming the few Ukranians left... I have been thinking that Stalin was Georgian. Anyway, I find your answer a little unusual.

People who actually carried out Ukrainian genocide of late 1920s were an ethnically mixed bunch, so there is enough blame for everyone there. But it is only a later, albeit a particularly ghastly, episode in several centuries of Russification policies in Ukraine. Just like these same policies in "Kingdom of Poland" [or "Privislyansky krai"] go a long way towards the roots of Polish dislike for anything Russian.

Stalin was an ethnic Georgian. No Russian name ever ended in "shvili".Djugashvili changed his name to a Russian sounding name with an -in ending, "Stalin" in order to dissacociate himself with his Georgian heritage. He thought the supplicant Georgians were weak and contemptible. Self-hatred is a common malady of communists.
In 1921 when the Bolsheviks invaded and conqured Georgia, Stalin was on their side, not Georgia's.
Stalin exiled hundreds of thousands from Georgia for allegedly collaborating with the Nazis.

I have been thinking that Stalin was Georgian.
And Hitler was Austrian. Guess that lets Germany off the hook for what happened in say, Poland.
