Who's Cooking for Thanksgiving? (Take a break from politics)

Posted on 11/20/2004 6:03:08 PM PST by annyokie

What do you make, besides turkey? My Italian relatives made lasagna or ravioli.

I make a terrific cheesecake and the recipe is available for all who ask!

I never used my spring-form pans until I got this recipe. I have thre of them and this recipe takes the largest one.

I'm not Italian, either, but I have a pasta machine and a ravioli pan. If only I could get hubby on board.

Thanks for the tips. With goose, the procedure is a little different.

1. Put goose in the oven.

2. After 30 minutes, drain.

3. Cook for 30 minutes.

4. Drain.

5. Cook for 30 minutes.

6. Drain ...

I noticed the trend about greenbean casserole also.........I've never made it, and I don't even think I've ever eat it....LOL!

As for the turkey - 450, then 375 gives a nice crisp skin and seals in juices real fast.

Sounds awesome.

That's what we have here in Massachusetts as wel so perhaps it's a normal American meal.

I have to mention that we use lots of squash. Especially in this timne of the year!

Arioch7 out.

I didn't add that this makes the turkey super moist and brown. You can actually slice it into slices...not piles of turkey shreds!!!

And my reasoning for the double pans...w/using a rack, it is easy to poke a whole (ie., spring a leak) and then you have a supersize mess on the day when you need your oven functioning perfectly.

PS, my wonderful mother-in-law ALWAYS insists that the foil pans should be washed and reused. Every year we have the same discussion at my kitchen sink. I, no doubt, ruining our finances by my wanton disregard of foil backware.

I had made pumpkin pies on Thankgiving for my thankless ex-in laws. I was crippled with brochitis, but still made pies with homemade crusts and walnut brittle. I served them up and got told "I hate walnuts."

Do you do anything with the oysters, poach them or chop them or just add them whole with all the rest of the ingredients?

Sorry I sound so dense, but I've never put anything but apple, celery, onion and sometimes nuts in my stuffing.

Greenbean casserole is gross. I made it for my thankless former in-laws. They loved it, of course.

Hey woman!
Great thread!
I'll do a Turkey breast, mashed potatoes, veggie medley, fruit and chicken nuggets for the picky one.

We are doing the big celebration in Cleveland on Saturday. That's an all day buffet! It continues into bruch Sunday when the busy boys (my three great nephews, 7, 4, and 3, all full of energy) can make it. I LOVE those boys!

I really miss seeing the babies grow up. I was blessed with two new great nieces this year. My Goddaughter's girl will be almost a year old and the other is not too far behind.
We stay with my nephew, his better half and their two DARLING children. Their Jonathan is my "Sweetie" and I just love when he comes up to me, takes my hand and says, "Come on, Sweetie." It melts my heart like butter! His sister is a delicate sprite. I think she will always be the baby of the family.

Geez, I can't wait to get down there!!!

That's understandable!!!!

I use it for the base for a leftover casserole instead of potatoes or noodles.

Well, I went to Lowe's earlier and bought a smoker; Mrs. Pharmboy won't trust me to make the only turkey, so we're making two (one the oven-trusted way and one in the smoker).

Question for anyone listening: should I stuff the bird that I'm smoking or leave it empty?

Call me lazy, but I don't do pies much anymore. There are several already cooked pecan pies that just need to be thawed, and several great pumpkin pies that you just have to cook an hour or so.

When bought pies (frozen) first came out, the crust was like cardboard, but now the good brands make them as good as I can. While confessing, I should also say that I bought the caramel cake and the fresh apple cake. There is a little old lady (what am I saying--she's not much older than I) in town who bakes great cakes and is so reasonable that it would be criminal not to buy from her. Both the apple and caramel cakes are safely wrapped and in the freezer--both freeze very well.

Tomorrow or Monday, I will parboil the sweet potatoes, peel, slice and put in casserole with butter and sugar, ready to bake. Will also make up the dressing and freeze both. Thanksgiving Day will be a matter of cooking and serving, not standing for hours prepping.
