Who's Cooking for Thanksgiving? (Take a break from politics)

Posted on 11/20/2004 6:03:08 PM PST by annyokie

What do you make, besides turkey? My Italian relatives made lasagna or ravioli.

I make a terrific cheesecake and the recipe is available for all who ask!

I absolutely love oysters, but have never understood the love affair people have with deep frying them. The only way I really like them cooked is steamed....but I will definitely have to try your family recipe.

To me the BEST (practically only) way to eat them is freshly shucked right out of the shell!!!

I've eaten oysters practically all my life, but it wasn't until the first time I had oysters from Chincoteague that I truly understood what a masterpiece of delight and oyster can be. I never truly enjoyed "regular" oysters after that...........but now I have no problem, I live 15 minutes away!!!!

BTW - I took a look at your homepage - you're a hoot!!!! Good for you!

I was just teasing, but do NOT smoke a stuffed turkey (or turnkey GABZ!!). Stuffing increases cooking time and you will burn the thing before the middle is ready to eat.

Oh, heavenly-sounding!! thanks so much, I'll give it a try on Thursday! The fact that I get to add bourbon is a gift in itself! thanks again.

The deer around here are the same. The other day there were a bunch of threads about deer from different parts of the country - I was replying on the thread as I was watching them out my front window at the tree line across the road.

But they've been bad all year............I was truly shocked by the numbers I saw in the middle of the day all summer long.

I agree about the open season - it would sure help stock my freezer :)

Imagine frying a lobster in vegetable oil.
Now imagine dipping lobster in butter.

That's the difference between fried oysters and my recipe. You can actually taste both the butter and the oysters.

What the wild deer around here do to a garden has to be seen to be believed. I lost all my fresh herbs except a few I had planted in pots on the back porch.

I live for pecans!!!!!!! We all eat them. I can't keep any kind of nuts in this house - when I buy them for cooking, I have to hide them.

If the danged deer hadn't decimated my garden - I could be sending all kinds of stuff to you - and probably half of FR.............I'll figure out a way to thwart them next year!!!

The allergy is only pecans. I can eat peanuts, macadamias, cashews, etc.

That's good news!!!!!!

I was totally unaware of that and figured I was relatively safe because of all the corn and soybeen fields around here.

Boy was I wrong. And I put in 1/3 of an acre garden......they got just about everything the excess rain and ensuing weeds didn't..........including more than half my hot peppers.

Some hunter is going to be mighty surprised when he bites inot a habanero spiced venison steak this winter!!!!

I boil them in their jackets for about 20 minutes or until a knife tip can pierce them. Drain them and peel after they cool where you can handle them.

Slice them 1 inch wide (I usually slice them lengthwise first and then crosswise) into chunks and toss with 1 stick of melted butter and as much brown sugar or maple syrup as you like. Sprinkle with cinnamon, mace, nutmeg and bake in a greased casserole dish for 30 minutes or until done to your desire. If you like marshmallows as a topper, add them about 5 minutes before you want to take it out.

If you like them mashed (I don't know how many you need to feed so, feel free to modify. My recipes are for 4 hearty eaters or six regular folks):

Take boiled sweet potatoes out of their jackets and mash with a potato masher or in a mixer with a flat blade until smooth while slowly pouring in one stick (1/4 Pound) of melted butter and a half cup of brown sugar. Fill a greased casserole dish with the whipped potatoes and dot with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon.

These recipes are for four to six people. They call for four to six potatoes depending on size.

FYI Don't try to cook giant pans of anything. Make many small pans and you will be a hero.

The nuts are in the mail on Monday, my girl. If you want more, they grow them up the road.
