This is a rewarding if somewhat surprising story. First, the young men took action to protect their grandfather.... the article doesn't give their ages or their grandfather. Second, the statement by the Chief of Police is refreshingly candid and all too rare.
"Grandsons camp out at house to catch burglar

Friday, December 10, 2004

Associated Press

Two brothers were determined to stop someone from breaking into their grandfather's Washington County home for the third time in less than a week, so they armed themselves with rifles and camped out, police said.

Sure enough, Brian and Bob Reihner came face-to-face with an armed man breaking into their grandfather's North Franklin Township home early yesterday, township police Chief Mark Kavakich said.

The confrontation ended with the arrest of Steven A. Wallace, 19, of Washington, police said.

"This is how kids should take care of their grandparents," Kavakich said. "They stepped up and may have saved their grandfather's life."

The Reihners decided to stay with their grandfather, Daniel Denman, after two men confronted Denman in his home over the weekend and someone again robbed the house on Tuesday. The people stole cash, a compact disc player and rolls of quarters.

Early yesterday, the brothers were napping when they heard someone forcing their way into Denman's home, Brian Reihner said.

The Reihners aimed their rifles at Wallace, who pulled a handgun on the brothers before he ran out of the house, Brian Reihner said.

Police later arrested Wallace in a shopping mall parking lot. He was arraigned on burglary, aggravated assault and other charges.

"Something had to be done," Brian Reihner said. "I was afraid he'd do bodily harm to my grandfather. He was there for the money and would have done whatever it takes to get it."

"You already have too many smarts for the yob..."

LOL! Nice to know somebody appreciates me.

We have all these mandatory training things we have to do. Today was quarterly training that everybody has to do. You wouldn't believe what a waste of time and resources it is....while real work that's already behind, isn't getting done. Multiply that by several hundred people, 4 times a year, plus travel reimbursement for hours and mileage. For me it is a 3 hour drive each way (pretty close anyway) and approx. $100 for mileage....and that's just for the quarterly trainings. We have all kinds of other stuff we have to go to also, that are at least as big a waste of time and money.

And some of the "training" is just silly. For example, the last mandatory quarterly training focused on taking care of black children's hair and skin. I could count on the fingers of one hand the number of black, or part black children in our county. The same could be said for most of the 9 county area involved, with maybe one or two exceptions. And we learned nothing that we couldn't have learned just as well from staying in our own office and watching a video.

"Have fun and make sure Gran and Darks behave"

" HAHAHAHAHA ... Fat chance of that happening"

Well, you never know. I hear whips and chains can work wonders...although SOME people might like it.

Judging by my pings, it looks like some heavy troll activity today. Did something happen today that stirred up the RATs' nest?

"Imaginary friends eventually disappear because, as with other toys, children likely lose interest"

You mean I was supposed to make my imaginary friend move out?

"How is the shopping going ? I'm almost through, just have a few more to get then finishing up the wrapping."

I'm waiting till Dawn and Tyler are here to do some of it, because we're going to Eureka Springs and that's a fun place to shop. Besides, I'm sure Tyler will have a hundred more things he "needs" come up after he gets here. Dawn is doing his shopping here so she doesn't have to bring extra stuff on the plane. I can always send them a spare bag to go back. The big remote control Hummer I got Tyler will have to be shipped back though. But it turns out that that was something he was really wanting. Am I good, or what? LOL! I got him a Game Boy Advance and a couple of games too. That'll give him something to do on the way back. Dang, those games are expensive! Dawn's big thing she wants is the Lord of the Rings Extended version gift set. Unfortunately, that isn't available until Tuesday and I hope I can even find a gift set here. I expect there will be a mad rush on the stores for it. I have gotten her a few other little things. I have nothing wrapped though. In fact, I've only bought one roll of paper so far. And I still have to shop for decorations! Yikes!

I will be taking my few working hours Christmas week to deliver Christmas gifts to my kids. That'll be fun. I hope to get it all done. I have about 45 kids. I plan to get some pictures. Between my kids and MY kids, I'm sure there'll be lots of pictures. I don't expect to see much of Nermal Christmas week. He will be busy with Dawn and Tyler. He will have no time for me. LOL!

One good thing about my long drive today, I'm happy to announce that every county courthouse between here and there has a nativity on display. Ssssshhhh....don't tell the ACLU. Or better yet, tell them to pound sand.
