Which AR-15 to buy?
11/18/2004 | TC Rider

The election is over, the AWB has been overturned, it's time to buy some new firepower.

I've been shooting some 3-gun matchs using my little Kel-tec Sub-Gun. It's fun to shoot, but not the best for 3-gun matchs.

I've decided to pump some money, $900-1100, into the evil firearms industry.

My question to fellow Freepers is, "Which One?"

My Criteria:

Primary Purpose - 3 gun matchs

Secondary Purpose - P!ss off Feinstein and Schumer, SHTF scenarios, maybe some varmint hunting (but I doubt it), I have the Remington 1100 for Home Defense

Desired features - 16" heavy barrel (easy to clean)

Collapsable stock

Lots of rails for hanging goodies like optics, lights

I'm leaning towards a flat-top (my eyes are old and I need optics)

Reliability is a must have, easy to clean is a plus

Also, if anyone knows of a variable power scope 1-4x that would be great.

Colt won't allow dealers to sell no-ban ar15's to commoners.

Armalite, Bushmaster & rock river all make highly regarded ar15's. It would be hard to go wrong with one from either of those three companies.

Thanks. I've been hearing lots of good things about the Rock River line.

Rock River may be hard to get since they got the DEA contract. Bushmaster is good too, I'm leaning in that direction.

I'm leaning towards one or the other.

The second one looks good, a National Match Rifle.

Why is Colt being such a dip now that the Clinton Gun Ban is gone?

When the United States Military starts buying the new M-8 rifle from Heckler and Koch around 2005 they are really going to need some more revenue.

The XM8 has been downgraded - it won't be a replacement rifle, just an experimental rifle - at least for the time being.

Colt has a reputation for being less than friendly towards the general gun buying public. It's like they just don't care that much about what regular gun buyers think.

Seems like I heard that Colt was about do for some more union problems soon, I guess that means it's contract time.

Search is over. Went to the gun show today, not a Rock River in sight and few Bushys. There were Olys out the wazoo and some overpriced Colts and Armalites.

I found a Bushy I like at a gun show dealer I've used before, but his price seemed high. I called a local shop I like and they had one just like it on the shelf for $50 less.

I ended up with a Bushmaster XM-15 'noban' M4 type carbine with 16" barrel. Had the collapsable stock, bayonet lug, flat top, etc. Didn't have the railed handguard, but I may add that later.

I did find some bargains at the gunshow, found a Aimpoint with mount for $350, 500 rounds of 55gr FMJ for 89 and some other goodies.

Took the whole deal down to our local range and had it sighted in no time at all.

Tomorrow it debuts at our local 3 gun match.

Thanks for the help, wish me luck!

Good luck and congratulations.

Just be sure you don't use an 'olympic' brand ammo in your ar15 (or anywhere else, for that matter)
