Pro-Abortion Legislator Outraged over Priest's Direction to Quit Church Choir
ANDOVER, Massachusetts, November 16, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) -St. Augustine's Catholic church in Andover has a choir and state Rep. Barbara L'Italien likes to sing. The pro-abortion politician is a cantor and head of the parish youth choir and has refused to quit when asked by Fr. William Cleary, the new priest. She says she will only leave the volunteer post if she receives the request in writing.
While L'Italien has complained to local papers that she is being targeted for being a Democrat, Fr. Cleary has denied that it has anything to do with her party affiliation. "In this particular case, we're dealing with a person who is against the church's position (on abortion)," Cleary said. "I can't allow her to be in a public posture -- to be standing up at the pulpit singing or directing singing."
L'Italien gives the now-standard excuse for supporting abortion as a Catholic legislator, known popularly as the "Cuomoism". She says she has a 'private opinion' about abortion but must represent a broad range of opinion among her constituents and cannot make a decision against abortion for someone else. Please email the priest to congratulate him.
She never should have been given the post in the first place. Gee, I wonder what the previous priest was like...
The Democrat who is violating Church law and then claiming discrimination should have her faxes and phones ringing off the hook.
Canon Law is very specific -- the Pastor have very powerful authority over his Church/Parish.
The Democrat violates Church law by voting pro-abortion.
She compounds this by demanding the priest put it in writing for a frivolous suit against the Catholic Church.
If I were the Pastor, I would have no problem, after several verbal warnings, to give a scathing homily on pro-abortion politicians -- if she still decided to stay with the children's choir and with the children present.
The corruption of the children by this beast is the most important issue.
This Democrat is trying to a lawsuit launched against the Catholic Church.
Freepers need to freep this Democrat.
She is currently barred from receiving communion in Archdiocese of Atlanta, and Dioceses of Charlotte and Charleston.

Both Archbishop O'Malley and Father Cleary need some time to get things straighened out.
Archbishop O'Malley inherited a mess...
I have no problem with the lawmaker getting a ton of views from the public, on the other hand...
Is VOTF a new Call to Action or whatever that extremely liberal/anti-magisterium group was?
I have not been keeping up with my heresies lately...
But I did a few years ago have the Nun who was author of Dead Man Walk Walking called to the carpet for giving a talk at a Call to Action conference.
I wrote the Papal Annunicio about that as well her Bishop. It is one thing to be a bad example -- it is another to be a famous Nun bad example.
Fr. Cleary is new to the Parish, and I guess he's just looking to set things right. Good for him!!
Its leadership consists of much the same people, however they've been able to glom on to the abuse scandal to draw in people who don't want wholesale changes to the Church, they just want the perverts removed from contact with kids. These good folks are being used by the activists who want to change the celibacy tradition, and want the Church to be more 'democratic' and let the people decide what should be sinful and what shouldn't.
Father Cleary could reply, "Even if I had a 'private opinion' about abortion, I must represent the opinion among the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and cannot make a decision against them for someone else."
Yup.
Please email the priest to congratulate him.
Will do.
T'is the land o Kennedys & Kerrys. O'Malley, if given half a chance, can do a lot of good. Remember, the NY Times got the short end of the stick when they went after another Capuchin -- Chaput of Denver.
And that was all the NY Times fault...
The fact this making the local media so heavy will cause problems for the kids in the choir -- but is their choir leader's fault -- she should not use doublespeak to defend herself.
The Bishops of Massachusetts said on Election Day that the Right to Life was the most important issue.
This woman should have paid heed to that.
I believe Capuchin Archbishop O'Malley will support this good priest. He has had his hand full with church closings, the abuse scandal -- and having Kennedy and Kerry claim to be Catholics in his Archdiocese.
