Marquette University considers changing nickname back to Warriors (undo PC decision) - VANITY
Marquette University | 11-16-2004 | Me

Marquette University (of which I am an alum) changed it's nickname from the Warriors to the Golden Eagles in 1994 in a move laced with Political Correctness. The old logo was of an Indian, but hardly something that was offensive.

10 years later, I applaud the university for sending out an online survey to all Marquette alums, staff, students, etc. about reconsidering the nickname.

Many of us are hoping. We may get our nickname back but change the logo / mascot to something not "ethnically offensive", perhaps to a Knight, Trojan, Spartan or other such "warrior".

At any rate, Marquette took a lot of gruff from Rush and many others in the mid 1990's for their change...and rightly so.

This current move by the university hopefully will reverse a silly decision and bring back the Warriors!

I'm guessing that many alumni donations have gone uncollected since their surrender to the PC movement. This may be a ploy to reclaim some of those gifts...without actually having to change the name back.

Why would an Indian logo be "ethnically offensive" but not a Trojan or a Spartan? By that same logic, would it not be offensive to people from Troy or Sparta? Is it OK to offend Turks and Greeks?

I guess because most other groups don't get in a tizzy when they see FIGHTING IRISH, or Boston CELTICS, etc, etc.

It is, apparently, perfectly fine to have Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, or Scandinavian mascots, or even to ridicule those ethnic groups. Other ethnic groups, however, are a no-go.

As you alluded, Notre Dame has as its mascot a drunken, brawling Irishman. Fine for an Irishman to be portrayed as a drunk, but no firewater references to American Indians, please.

It's OK to refer to someone welshing on a bet, but don't dare accuse anyone of being an "Indian giver."

It's perfectly acceptable to refer to the legendary penny-pinching of a Scotsman, but you must not ever imply that a Jew bargains a bit too hard.

And all bets are off when Southern or Appalachian white people are referred to, even on network TV. Can you imagine the outcry that would have ensued if the feckless bumpkins in the Beverly Hillbillies had been black or Latino?

The Greek foot soldiers were known as hoplites. They would look excellent on a logo.

Warrior means someone who fights. No racial connotations right there.
