Sorry for this thread, but I am having a LOT of trouble with my computer and I`m getting pretty bugged because I can`t afford a new one.. A few weeks a go a Freeper really helped me (after I tried to get help from Microsoft about a billion times) after I noticed some other freepers asking for computer help.
What the problem is, is I can`t boot up my computer. It takes me literally 10 to 20 times. Each time I boot I get tons of error messages. "Rundlll32.exe error" "Ps.exe error" this error that error just too may to list, and the computer either locks up or doesn`t boot at all. I even had one time were it said "fan has stopped. Bring computer to get serviced immediately" (I opened it up and there is no dust or dirt, the fan works fine)
What I have is Windows XP on a HP Pavillon 545x with 1024 memory. These problems went on a few weeks ago and a Freeper told me I had too many programs loaded and told me to uncheck everything in my startup that didn`t begin with the letters LAST and it worked! It worked great! I could boot right up after that.
Now the other day, Microsoft updated my computer without me knowing what I was doing and totally screwed it up again, and now it`s 1000 times worse! Just to write this post it took me over an hour to boot this damn thing, I tried everything. I also noticed that now in the msconfig program I now have this "services" check list. Does anyone know how I can boot up the absolute basic microsoft stuff for Windows XP? This is a nightmare. Like my original tagline said (which I will soon put back up if I can`t get this fixed) "What`s the difference between John Kerry and Windows XP? Windows XP works once in a while."

Get real, they are the ones most likely to use your computer to visit porn sites thus causing the spyware problems. ;)
From the description this person says they got updated by MS, I know a couple of people that XP service pack 2 just didn't work, they had to take it off their machine.
THANKS! I have a feeling this just may be a virus, no computer can act this nuts. You wouldn`t believe it. It`s done everything but tell me my computer is going to explode.
It's frustrating! Hang in there...write down the EXACT error you're getting and make a list of the things it does to you...then use these notes to ask some of these online experts where to start to fix the problem. Good luck!

I would suggest that if you run system restore, do it in "Safe Mode"

Mine downloaded 2 weeks ago and I have no installed it. If it goes bad, I am SOL... I have no money or ability to fix it... and my FR days are over =o(
I've put off installing SP2. Waiting for all the bugs to be worked out.
What? I thought they were ironed out! Honest, I didn't have any trouble at all. (Cross fingers)
I just tried to download that and once again I got the rundll32.exe error over and over but it still downloaded it. I`m installing it now. I`m going to try to reboot once I run it.
Buy another hard drive, install it in place of your current boot drive, install WinXP on it, then hook up the first drive as a second drive (jumper it as a Slave,) and reboot. Then you should have all of your current data files, without losing them.
You'll have to re-install all your apps, but you'll have a good clean system. Then immediately download and install Zone Alarm Pro ($39.95, I think) and a good anti-virus app. Then download and install Mozilla Foxfire broswer and use it instead of Internet Explorer.
Yup, that should do it. (If all that is really beyond your comfort level, get someone to do it for you.)

Another GOOD site to go to to find viruses is Trendmicro.com. they have a virus scanner thre that will find nearly ANY virus, even the ones that norton misses!
They probably have. We have our computers at work updated quarterly, and the last time they were there, they suggested to hold off. But that was about a quarter of a year ago, so it probably is fine, especially since you have seen no problem. Is your anti-virus program updating correctly? If not, it probably is the SP2 firewall. Just check it.

Also, do you have Home or Pro at home?
