Didn't hear that, but as much as an idiot as Matthews can be I don't believe he would compare the U.S. Marines to the Werhmacht. He may have meant that the terrorists are now in the position of the red Army at Stalingrad, taking up their final positions. Of course no one has said where the fedayeen are going to get the T 34 tanks that pulled into Stalingrad on flatcars, unpainted direct from the factory. But I digress, I think he was groping for the most violent bit of urban warfare in history to offer comparisons.

My own take is that this approaches the siege of Hue City when 5th Marines took the Citadel. Victor Davis Hanson does a remarkable telling of that story in Carnage and Culture.

I wish I could believe your explanation for Matthew's comments..that he was only referring to tactical/military issues. But I heard him and its not the first time he has voiced that type of sentinment. No one has called him on it..but someone should. He asked directly if the "people of falluja" were manning their posts like at stalingard." A transcript I am sure is available and I predict is even more damming that what I have said. I say "damming" if you believe that it is outrageous for him to make that historical analogy putting us with the Nazi's and the terrorist with the brave defenders of Stalingard.
