The Old Water-Wheel
Clark Ashton Smith

Often, on homeward ways, I come
To a deserted orchard, old and lone,
Unplowed, untrod, with wilding grasses grown
Through rows of pear and plum.

There, in a never-ceasing round,
In the slow stream, by noon, by night, by dawn,
An ancient, hidden water-wheel turns on
With a sad, reiterant sound.

Most eerily it comes and dies,
And comes again, when on the horizon's breast
The ruby of Antares seems to rest,
Fallen from star-fraught skies:

A dolent, drear, complaining note
Whose all-monotonous cadence haunts the air
Like the recurrent moan of a despair
Some heart has learned by rote.

Heavy, and ill to hear for one
Within whose breast, today, tonight, tomorrow,
Like the slow wheel, an ancient, darkling sorrow
Turns, and is never done.

Tulip Trees

The perfect tree for a distant time, ‘ere Man was in the wood,
It harbored birds and bunnies, squirrels and mice, and all was very good.
And man arrived, with ax and saw, and made the world his own,
The tulip tree, despite its grace, into this brawl was thrown.

"How useful is this tree," he said, and cut into the wood,
"We’ll make our homes and furniture, and life will be so good."
The tree, of course, did not care which, would eat it or enjoy,
It sought to spread its wings by any means it could employ.

It did not judge the animals, or men who sought its shade,
But sought to dwell in harmony to all within the glade.
This is a lesson we can learn who seek our place on Earth.
Be useful, but progress your way, and show the world your worth.

The Little Evangelist

Read: Mark 12:28-34

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. —Mark 12:30

Bible In One Year: Jeremiah 43-45; Hebrews 5

My 6-year-old neighbor Michael and I were talking in my front yard when two new neighbor kids stopped by. After I asked them their names, Michael's first question to them was: "Do you love God?" Sugar, a 5-year-old boy, quickly responded, "No!" Michael gave him a look of disapproval and concern. When 4-year-old Nana noticed he wasn't pleased with that answer, she said, "Yes!"

Michael's "witnessing strategy" may not be the most effective, but he does have an important question for the people he meets (and I've heard him ask it of several others as well).

Jesus was asked, "Which is the first commandment of all?" (Mark 12:28). He answered, "The Lord is one. 'And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength'" (vv.29-30).

Jesus was referring to Old Testament times, when God had told the Israelites to place Him as the one and only God in their lives and nation. The pagan nations around them had many gods they loved and worshiped, but God's people were to be different.

Loving God is to be our top priority too. So, Michael wants to know, "Do you love God?" —Anne Cetas

For Further Thought
Have you trusted in Jesus as your Savior?
What evidence is there in your life that you love God?
How are you showing God's love to others?

If you truly love the Lord, you'll want others to love Him too.

Love the angel graphic for our troops. Thank you. Found out yesterday my brother's battalion is activated January 4, heading to Iraq. They won't necessarily leave right away though... without a doubt, he's eager to go, but it's hard on my parents especially. At any rate, one day at a time, right?

Happy Harvey Wallbanger Day!

Ingredients:

1 1/4 oz. Vodka
Splash of Galliano
Orange juice

Pour Vodka & Orange juice over ice in a tall or Collins glass. Top with Galliano

This drink became popular in the 70's. There are two accounts both originating in California. One is that Bill Doner, while tending bar in a place named The Office in Newport Beach, created it. The other is that a surfer named Harvey liked his screwdrivers spiked with Galliano & after a hard day, had one to many & walked into a wall.
