The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

It's still new, and we aren't really sure what we're doin'...but I think it will become pretty neat as time goes on.

Just got the jedis in bed...they're listening to a radio show.

Spoke to Steve a few minutes ago. He said "I'll see you next Tuesday around 8pm."

They are aluminum, I think, 3 fletch, don't know the spine, have to look on the box and try to figure it out, I guess.

When OT and I went to that session in that bar in Tulsa, I had the BEST time! I was smiling so much I thought my face would split!

My dad's Lionel model train that is his latest toy. It's really loud when he's got whistles and engine sounds going. It was making me so nuts at Thanksgiving I had to go outside for awhile!

Sam, if they are aluminum, there will be a number like 1916, 2018 etc. That will be the "spine". Don't quite understand the ins and out of the aluminum but it's got to do with the wall thickness.

The screw in points come in a variety of weights as well. You can really fine tune it by varying the weight of the point and the length of the shaft.
I generally shoot wood, but do have some aluminum and fiberglass shafts.

I just asked the guy for some inexpensive arrows, didn't know they were aluminum until just now, when I looked at the box. Yes, I agree, wood would make more sense for these bows.

Do you make your own arrows?

I'd love to attend a "real" session! We're just making it up as we go along - don't really have a clue what's right. The guy that came tonight has been to lots of real sessions. I imagine we'll bug him for info. ;-)

Of course, I also imagine that sessions vary a LOT depending on the abilities of the regulars, the personalities of the regulars, the types of instruments that generally show up...lots and lots of factors.

If you ever get the chance... you'd love it. I've never ridden in a blackhawk/jayhawk, since they came about after my time. But I've ridden in lots of H-52's and H-65's, and a CH-47 (which I'd just as soon not repeat anytime soon).

The H-52 "flying motor lifeboat" is now no longer in service, but its the sorta classic boat-bottom helo that was the standard for many many years.

The H-65 "Dolphin" came into service while I was in, in the late 80's. It's a really sweet machine. Drives like a Porshe. Sounds about the same. Get in a close the door and it was nice and quiet. Very tight machine.

The CH-47 is so named becuase it is merely 47,000 aircraft parts all flying in close formation. It rattles and bangs and shakes and generally scares the living hell out of anybody with the guts to ever ride in one twice.

My understanding of a session was just that it was a group of players coming together and playing! I don't think there is any hard and fast rules...the ones I've heard about even had people that slowed down for less experienced players occasionally and such...

I could be wrong, though.

LOL!

I would really love to got up...but I don't suppose a civilian normally gets taken up in a Black Hawk...nobody exactly offered while I was at the unit. LOL!

I think it's a steak place or something. I can't even remember the name of the restaurant.

Aha! I finally found some pics: Here's an H-52. Ridden on many, many of these. They *always* flew with the side door open. When I asked why... I didn't like the answer. "It's easier to get out in a crash" they said.

And a H-65 Dolphin. Pure electric sex on a rotor, this machine is. (sorry, but its true). Really sweet. Really fast. Flys like a dream.

And a CH-47. This thing doesn't even *look* like it should fly, especially from the inside. The scariest moment I have ever had in an aircraft was in one of these. Landed (sortof) in the fog on the USS Ogden after a 90 minute flight, with less than ten pounds of fuel left on board. Ten pounds. That's about thirty seconds of fuel. No thanks. :-)

Those Chinooks fly over our house occasionally...now that is one loud thunking chopper! You can hear it coming for like five minutes before you see it. I love 'em! I can feel them thunking in the inside of my brain and my jawbone! (Being slightly deaf makes you more aware of vibrations).

Yeah, I'd go up in one of those too if somebody would let me. Heck, I'd go up in any of them, but I guess if I had my pick I'd choose a Black Hawk...just 'cause of my fondness of the ones that fly over the house.

Well, I prefer wood for the wood bows, but nothing wrong with aluminum. There are some pretty good articles on fine tuning archery tackle. But not to confuse the matter now.

Spine is measured at 27" for AL (I think) and 28" for wood (that I know). Increasing the arrow length has the effect of lessening the spine or stiffness. Similarly cutting the arrow shorter than the spine length makes it stiffer or increases the spine.

Yup, make my own arrows. Not real great ones, but they fly good enough for me.
