The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Don't you have a model train too...a cheap one? Seems like you have one like Joshua used to have (we gave it to the Salvation Army.)

Let me consult "Andrea Immer's 2004 Wine Buying Book for Everyone" - my wine bible!

Ok, Zinf, zinf.... she says value zinfandels are great for drinking, which is a nice bonus. Trust me, I've had really nasty red wines. Note that none of these say anything about alcohol content and I'm clueless there, you'll have to check it out at the wine store.

"Beaulieu Vineyard Coastal" is supposedly cheap-ish and lasts well. You'll want the Coastal, not the Napa Valley, bottle.

"Cline", cheap and keeps well.

"Fetzer Valley Oaks", "Sutter Home", and "Woodbridge". I don't drink zinfandel much, so you're on your own as to how they taste and such.

I don't care what it tastes like at all...I'm thinking of dosing myself with it. According to the research, the zins with the 16% have the most of what's good for you. I plan on taking it right before bed, downing it like Nyquil.

And of course, if I could get one cheap, that'd be good.

I recognize Sutter Home...

Even if it's for your health and not for enjoyment...I don't see any reason NOT to enjoy it - rather than just downing it like medicine. Even if I was doing it to lower cholesterol, I'd still sip it!

Of the ones Jen mentioned, I've had Sutter Home and Woodbridge. I THINK Woodbridge was a little tastier, but it might have been more expensive, I don't remember.

Do not down it like medicine. You don't drink much these days, right? A red wine will go right to your head. Instead, sip it for the last half hour before bed. You'll feel much more relaxed.

And you probably would rather your boys didn't get the idea that wine is medicine! I'm sure they don't take medicine on their own, of course, but better to indicate that it's a "grown-up drink" than "it's good for you."

Well, I can't find the alcohol content online, but the price looks right. About $5! One 8-ounce serving is recommended.

$5? That seems really low. Wine is usually $8 for a cheap bottle and $12+ for anything half-decent. Does the price include taxes, which might be higher on wine?

Buying wine online? Where? I don't think it's legal in this state...

Naw...I'm just looking, not buying. I don't even know if I have the nerve to go into a liquor store and they don't sell wine anywhere else here in Oklahoma...

I never was a wine drinker, even before Steve stopped drinking years ago...I drank whiskey and continued even for a while after he quit...but I never felt comfortable drinking it in front of him so I just kinda stopped. I never had to, he never made me, but I just did.

So I'd almost rather sip Nyquil than wine...lol!

Don't be embarrassed. After all, if anyone there recognizes you and asks "what are you doing?", you just ask them why they're there!

A bottle of wine is not the same as drinking a bottle of vodka every night. There's nothing to be ashamed of, as long as it won't hurt Steve to have you drink around him.

Is it storming? Today it was warm enough that half the roads were passable. If it weren't for the glaciers in the parking lots, I'd be willing to go out tonight.

That's really what I'm thinking...I wouldn't feel comfortable "sipping and enjoying" an alcoholic beverage around him. Although he never restricted me, I always got the impression he appreciated my consideration.

And the jedis understand that there are drugs that one takes for pain and there are drugs that people abuse. Matthew knows that one is ok and one is wrong. He also knows that some people drink alcohol and they are not bad folks because of it (his grandmother, for example) but that our family abstains from drinking. I'm pretty sure I could explain to him that I drink 8 ounces of wine because it's shown to lower cholesterol and he would understand.

But again, sipping and enjoying wouldn't be part of the lesson. I would really take it very perfunctorily.

But I still don't think "gulping" wine is a good plan. Isn't that likely to give you a headache? And make you woozy?

You did, but "perfunctorily" is just not a word one should associate with wine.
