I know first hand what the world thinks of America and it is not a pretty picture at the moment.
WHO CARES? Show me one example in the past 50 years where what the world thinks of America mattered. Or 100 years or 150 years. GET IT? Does France care what the world thinks, and has it ever? IMHO, the only solution to your situation is to refuse (militantly if necessary) to talk about politics with your son in law. You are in an otherwise impossible situation unless you want to risk all (your daughter) and go to war.
