I'm almost 39 so i've been in a few ... currently working on a Maiden tribute band though my real love is current power/progressive bands like Edguy, Gamma Ray, Angra, Sonata Arctica, Kamelotm, Symphony X ... but that won't sell in America .. and it's hard to find guys who can PLAY it!

Imagine Kerry pandering to metalheads ... "I find heavy metal music inspiring ... I particularly like that band Iron Madmen ... " ... hahahahaaha
yea and im sure at that point bruce from maiden would go public and tell him to "bugger off"

It seems rock and metal groups would be more likely to be patriotic types than folk, new age, and pop music groups.Maybe so, but these are the first patriotic metal guys I've heard of. On the other hand, I'm not real into the metal scene. But I do listen to it on occasion (the late-night DJ's on the local college station play the hard stuff -- Deicide, Slayer, etc) and my impression is that it's almost uniform in being militantly anti-Christianism reflexively anti-establishment, both of which are key elements in anti-Americanism.

I like a lot of the melodic death like early In Flames and early Soilwork and Dark Tranquility ... sadly, a lot of the pioneers of that genre have started to lapse into "nu metal" ... a couple great US melodeath bands to check out (if u haven't already) are Beyond The Embrace and Enforsaken.

Bolt Thrower (British death metal) is also good, especially the album "...For Victory". Most of their songs have a military theme.

A lot of the darker metal tends to get on the anti-religion side and I eschew that stuff ... metal is not so much patriotic as it is a statement of what we believe: self-reliance, no whining, kick the arse of anyone who keeps you from your goal.
This Iced Earth cd, though, is particularly pro-U.S., so much so that it alienated Euro -fans.

Yup, I know Bolt Thrower ...!

metal is not so much patriotic as it is a statement of what we believe: self-reliance, no whining, kick the arse of anyone who keeps you from your goal. That's true -- it kind of taps into the old Scots-Irish ideal of the ass-kicking rugged individual, and that fits right in with *liking* America. I guess metal is a mixed bag, like most other things.
To: Yardstick
Speaking of the Scots, Maiden did a great tune called "The Clansman" based on "Braveheart". "Freeeeee-dooooooom!"

I like that image....however, I've yet to see a bagpipe in a metal band!
Man! Would that be a trip or what?
This thread got me to thinking of Megadeth's 'Symphony of Destruction'.
Now I know Dave Mustaine is a raving leftie arsewipe, and the lyrics of that song are sort of vague,
but the video of it showed a tall, preppy, metro-u-know-what sort of glad-handing, baby-kissing, brown-nosing
stereotypical Saville Row suit wearing politician out pressing the flesh.
Now....does that remind you of any politician we know of?
What an appropriate song...
