Poor Talk radio reception in my area
personal observation | 10/25/04 | sunnyside

Posted on 10/25/2004 7:14:41 AM PDT by SunnySide

Why? What's with the terrible radio reception for the talk radio station when all the other FM stations come in really clear. It's extremely annoying. Am I the only person noticing this and why isn't it being corrected? Thanks

I listen to krla streaming almost all the time. It's great! But I have a question: Why does my streaming cut out sometimes?
Yorkville,IL, Comcast BB connection.
Does this happen to other people too?
I just lost Laura for about 15 minutes. I shut it down, and re-connected and now it's fine.

Peer through a glass darkly directly at the sun, see that cast?

Dunno. Perhaps you should post a vanity.

Could be, as AM definitely comes in better after the sun comes up.

Really? My experience is opposite - after sunrise, only the local strong stations come in on the AM broadcast band. I'm lucky, here, in that we have Rush on WJR-AM, which has a 50 kW transmitter.

What is the brand name of the radio?

What antenna are you using?

Does the radio have provision for attaching an external antenna?

You could build a simple "J-pole" antenna for 104.1 mHz to connect to the radio and that would give you about a 3db. gain in signal (100% increase). However the other 104.1 stations' scattered around your region will also be increased in signal strength and that leads to the "FM capture effect" where the strongest received signal is the one the receiver will hear.

Also a simple dipole would help.

If you want to pursue any of this contact me by freepmail.

"You haven't called the one party which will be able to help you--your phone company. The problem lies in your telephone, not with the radio station."

No, I called Verizon in. They came out and gave me the run-around: "Contact FCC, Contact Station, etc"

Funny how my phone lines were crystal clear before they started broadcasting. And your assumptions do little to explain why my desktop PC speakers are also picking up their program.

Neat!

What would it be?

Calling all freepers with Nov 24, 2000 sign up dates for our annual vanity thread(vanity)

That would work!!!

Wonder if the Mods would let it by?

I had lurked around FR for a couple of years before signing up. The 2000 election providing the final push.

How close to the transmitter are you?
How much power is the station transmitting?

If the station is transmitting a "clean" signal with no spurious emmisions then it really is not their problem.

The electronics that you own are not designed to handle a strong RF fields that are nearby.

There are filters available for your phone line.

If you have an "ham" (amateur radio licensee) friend ask him for some help with the RFI problem

The problem is "audio rectification".

My sign up number is 45,784 and yours is 45,874.
So at least NINETY FReepers signed up on Nov 24, 2000 with us.
Let's see what we can come up with!

Strength of AM signals also has to do with dial position. 5,000 watts at 540 AM is the same as 2,000,000 watts at 1600. There are still some FCC rules that limit the range of some stations over others that went on the air in the 1920s and 1930s. WHO, WLW and WLS and several other old-time stations are on night time clear channels. All other stations on their frequencies must go off the air at sundown (or drastically reduce power)while these stations power up and change pattern. If you see an AM radio station with four or five towers, you can guess its has a different day/night coverage and power. There are also Canadian clear channels (one is at 800 AM) that mandate all stations in north America go off at sundown.
