What? What in hell does the selective service, which you register for at 18, have to do with voting? Unless I am a crazy person, they have nothing to do with each other.

Like he'll be able to hide out if there's a draft.
The present military manpower is what, only 60% of
the peak during the all-volunteer period? We could
add a million just by authorizing it.
Anyone worried about a draft needs to vote for Bush.
Not voting, or voting for Kerry, raises the chances
of conscription.
I registered with the selective service when I was 18. A couple of wars have come and gone without my being drafted. I registered to vote a little over 4 years ago.
1 has nothing to do with the other.
First, registering for the draft is not voluntary, it is required by law. Turn in your draft dodging liberal wimp friend.
Second, don't urge him to register to vote. He is unable to reason logically, and would just vote like he is told by his rap-star heros on MTV. He can register when he grows up.
My 18 year old son registered to vote, and has not yet registered for Selective Service. They are two different things. Son will register for Selective Service, actually he will probably join the guards...
But, this guy shouldn't vote, since he is not even willing to ever defend that right. Lots of guys and gals have given up their lives, and many more have given up their comfort for his right to vote....and he will not even register....don't get me started...
Here's the official info:
Registration is the law. A man who fails to register may, if prosecuted and convicted, face a fine of up to $250,000 and/or a prison term of up to five years.
Even if not tried, a man who fails to register with Selective Service before turning age 26 may find that some doors are permanently closed.
STUDENT FINANCIAL AID
Men, born after December 31, 1959, who aren't registered with Selective Service won't qualify for Federal student loans or grant programs. This includes Pell Grants, College Work Study, Guaranteed Student/Plus Loans, and National Direct Student Loans.
CITIZENSHIP
The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) makes registration with Selective Service a condition for U.S. citizenship if the man first arrived in the U.S. before his 26th birthday.
FEDERAL JOB TRAINING
The Workforce Investment Act (formerly called the Job Training Partnership Act - JTPA) offers programs that can train young men for jobs in auto mechanics and other skills. This program is only open to those men who register with Selective Service. This applies only to men born after December 31, 1959.
FEDERAL JOBS
A man must be registered to be eligible for jobs in the Executive Branch of the Federal government and the U.S. Postal Service. This applies only to men born after December 31, 1959.
Some states have added additional penalties for those who fail to register. See State Legislation.

In some states, he wouldn't be able to get a driver's license. http://www.sss.gov/FSdrivers.htm
Last time I checked, you register for Selectric Service at the Post Office, whereas it seems that you register to vote at the welfare office or at the DMV.
While seldomly enforced, it's a $250,000 fine and up to 5 years in jail for failing to register.
Many states tie SSS registration to eligibility for student loans and other state programs. Additionally, your friend will be ineligible for a Federal job if he fails to register.
As the other poster mentioned, the sensible solution is to increase force levels while maintaining the all volunteer
force.
Here's agood link to the SSS system

It is the LAW that every male must register at selective service when he reaches the age of 18.
Tell him if John Kerry is elected there will definitely be a draft. Why, you may ask? If Kerry is elected there will be a mass exodus from all branches of the service including the National Guard, and reenlistments will plummet to near zero. Thats how much respect for Kerry our service members have, and it wont engender faith in any promise he makes to provide proper equipment and arms. Kerrys election would be a disaster for the safety of the USA.
