A mouse loose in a Somerset County house may have escaped injury early Tuesday morning, but a woman who lives there wasn't as fortunate.

State police at Somerset said 43-year-old Donald Eugene Rugg was attempting to shoot the rodent with a .22-caliber handgun inside the home he shares with 35-year-old Cathy Jo Harris, along Chicken Bone Road, in Lower Turkeyfoot Township, shortly after midnight.

As he fired the weapon, Harris reportedly walked into the path of the discharged round and was struck in the right arm with birdshot.

We used to call them 'ratshot'. It's a 22 LR round with many micro-size pellets. Use around the barn or farm for close quarters mouse combat :). It really is a real round.

No, those rounds are called rodent rounds. They make them for all sorts of guns. I have a box of 38 specials with birdshot. It's really not birdshot, it's more like tiny steel bearings, the size of those little sprinkles you find on top of chocolates. Like what's in a box of Snowcap chocolate bits. Lethal to rats at up to 40', but spares the structure.

    Yes.
 Birdshot.
 Not Bird$#!+.
 From a .22LR shot cartridge.
They load a .22LR cartridge with 40gr or so of #12 shot, and put a star crimp on the end.
It's usually marketed as "Snake Shot" cartridges.
#12 shot is almost dust. But it can do some damage at a few yards range.
The rifling in the .22 barrel tends to spread out the pattern.

Birdshot from a .22 handgun? Such rounds exist - snakeshot. Very, very small shotgun shell, basically, in a .22LR caliber.
I've got a box of 'em. Not at all reliable in semi-autos because there's not enough recoil energy to cycle the action, but fine in .22 revolvers.

They make a 22 long round with a small load of 'bird shot', specifically for shooting rats and such. Ol Cathy Jo's a lucky gal to have a thoughtful man like Donald Eugene around. Thoughtful and sensitive; like FnKerry.

Birdshot from a .22 handgun? They probably had rat shot shells, not bird shot.

Yeah I have shot them, I keep a .22 revolver loaded with the stuff for snakes. It is sometimes called snakeshot as well. Its the same size as a .22 but has tiny pellets in a plastic capsule on the top.

Upon analysis of the ballistics, I am force to conclude that the rat in question must have been the size of a pony (the woman was shot in the ARM), or flying through the air at an unusually high altitude.
