Tracer pellets. LOL.. Now that may be a possibility for someone to come up with for gun users.

Of course it's a real place. This isn't the NY Times. This is the Trib. They don't make stuff up.

Upon analysis of the ballistics, I am force to conclude that the rat in question must have been the size of a pony (the woman was shot in the ARM), or flying through the air at an unusually high altitude.

And it's just like shootin' wamp rats in Beggar's Canyon back home...

Not me -- I don't want to be associated with weapons of mouse destruction....

Interesting pattern ...Better consistency than I might have expecetd. If I understand the labelling correctely, the little plastic dome didn't shatter. If so, I'm surprised.

A dip net is the ideal instrument for debatting a house. Swat, twist, take outside, untwist, unswat and the bat is back to work eating bugs OUTSIDE the house. Bats occasionally get into the trditional family estate (a log farmhouse in Michigan's UP) and it only takes 2 or 3 minutes to remove a bat with a net.

See reply #107. It's a real place.

And, from other postings, apparently there is .22 bird shot.

Yeah, even though they call it "birdshot",
birds usually fly away before you can get close enough to use it.
It's much more handy for smaller vermin like snakes, mice and rats.
You can shoot 'em up close without worrying too much about how far the shot will travel.
But of course, there ARE exceptions!

"Gotta love those place names:
"Chicken Bone Road, in Lower Turkeyfoot Township"

And note the "struck in the right arm with birdshot" line."

===

You took the words right out of my fingertips, LOL!

Birdshot out of a .22 - aimed at a mouse on the floor, no doubt - hit her in the arm.

Next time - get a mouser. That's a cat's job.

I've had problems in the past with roof rats in the attic and walls. Will it penetrate dry wall panels? (I've got brick veneer, so I wouldn't have to worry about it going out the other side, and I know about where the gas line runs. )

Depends on how close you are.
With drywall, I'm sure you could expect some damage,
but at a reasonably "safe" distance, it's likely that you'd only get a few tiny holes that didn't penetrate all the way through, perhaps similar to a BB or pellet pistol, only with smaller shot. Should be able to putty over 'em pretty easy. Not like a larger, solid slug. (Of course, if you get too close, you're more likely to blow a larger hole.) I'd suggest using a scrap piece of drywall for target practice so you get a feel for how powerful they are at different distances. (and don't forget to wear safety glasses.)

a few tiny holes that didn't penetrate all the way through,

That won't work then. I was thinking of something that would go throught the wall and hit them (you can hear where they are scratching around in there) without leaving too big of a mess. Of course, you'd still have to cut the wall to get them out before the smell starts, but that's not something to worry about in the middle of the night.

...35-year-old Cathy Jo Harris, along Chicken Bone Road, in Lower Turkeyfoot Township, shortly after midnight.

Okay, this is a joke, right? Right???

No, I don't think that would work either.
Even if you put the muzzle right up against the drywall, you'd probably wind up blasting a big hole, but the drywall would take the brunt of the force while the critters would remain relatively safe and unharmed (maybe scratched up a bit, but not enough to wipe 'em out.)

I prefer the Mcyver extermination method myself. Strip off the ends of an old lamp cord, spread some peanut butter on the ends and plug it in. When Mr. Mouse connects the circuit ZOT!!!. No more dragging traps off or having them swallow poison only to die in some inaccesible part of the house and stink the place to high heaven. Instant zap and in the trash can.

You'd laugh but we had this lanky old SMSgt named Junior in the ME that made such a trap w/ a board, 4 nails and a lamp cord connected to the ME's 220 system. One line to a metal plate and the other to a fence of wire supported by the nails. A small dab of MRE cheeeeeeeseeeee spread in the center , shoved it under his bunk and went to sleep.

About Oh Early Thirty AM a mouse completed the circuit and kAbOOOM ! It sounded like a grenade had went off under juniors bunk. There was flambe mooose'n mice crap everywhere in that tent. Stunk really bad.

No one let Junior trap mice after that !

Stay safe !

Gotta use 120VAC. 220VAC makes a mess, although it's kewl to watch. Best sploding varmint electricity wise I've seen was in an industrial building in L.A. The rats would step on the 440 vac bus bars and go boom. Just vaporized em. Big blue streaks of light and gone. A heavy duty bug zapper if you will.
