basic tags problems at FR
10/12/04 | self

Posted on 10/12/2004 4:17:20 AM PDT by Paul_B

I'm finding that certain html tags are not being recognized at FR. I started using an html editor for some simple markup, and it's font color tags and Div indent tags aren't working.

I tried using the [code] tag to show coding, but that didn't work either, so I'm substituting { and } for < and >.

Here is how the editor (Nvu, excellent freeware) would mark up a passage:

{div style="margin-left: 40px;"}{span style="color: rgb(0, 102, 0);"}Then he answered and said to me, "This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel saying, "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit," says the Lord of hosts.{/span}{br style="color: rgb(0, 102, 0);"} {br style="color: rgb(0, 102, 0);"} {/div}

Here's how that looks:

Then he answered and said to me, "This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel saying, "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit," says the Lord of hosts.<br>

I see no indent and no coloring.

But this is how I must do it manually (I'm using Opera to post and view):

{blockquote}{font color="green"}Then he answered and said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel saying, ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts.{br}

And here's how that looks:

Then he answered and said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel saying, ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts.

When I make a file using Nvu's tags Opera displays them without problem, so I don't think the problem's there. Could it be nested Div tags? For some reason FR is preventing these tags from working.

FR does not recognize all HTML tags, only the basics. This allows for basic formatting, but limits the abilities to mess with things more drastically (otherwise I could embed Active-X, Javascript, etc., and play holy havoc with things if I desired).

This seems to work for me:

Then he answered and said to me, “Type in your text with the HTML code and it shall appear before the unbelievers thusly."

LOL. Sounds like a lot of my computing efforts over the last . . . what . . . since 1976--have had either a terminal or computer in my home!

Often had to concoct workarounds.

Makes sense, to a point. I've gotten around the prob by using a file as a template, so I don't have to write the tags each time. Thanks.

Free Republic Supported HTML Tags and Attributes

As this thread is quite dated, it may or may not accurately represent the current situation.

I did a "view source" on the page and it seemed to me that all the modifiers were stripped out of the span and div tags that you had tried to apply - whereas the older style Font declatrations and such survived the posting process.

Maybe that's not clear, but it will become clearer if you do a "view source" on the page.

It sure is dated- this is what I got:

Yes, I follow you on that. But it's merely due to my choppy cut/paste job in posting this article. Even when the tags are complete the Div-style tags are not working here.

Apologies. Didn't even see a News/Chat designation when I posted. Will look for it next time.

No such file (give_legacy_article)

The thread came up when I tried the link before posting.
Clicked on it three times after your reply and received the "No such file" message each time.
Clicked a fourth time and it came up again.

Go figure?

QUITE RIGHT!

But I think BLUE is prettier. Now if we could just get the political maps this election to put the Commies in red and leave the PATRIOTS IN BLUE!!!

I'd be a lot happier!
