Police blotters, 9/20: 8-year-old boy kicked by horse at Lincoln show

An 8-year-old boy suffered minor injuries when a horse kicked him off the two-wheeled scooter he was riding at the Lancaster Event Center Sunday, Lincoln fire Capt. Dustin Morton said. The boy was kicked in the right side of the face. The horse, which had been in a weekend horse show, spooked as he rode past, Morton said.

I was kicked by my pony when I was little. I had a perfect imprint of a horse shoe on my chest for quite some time after that. There was no Internet back then, so my story didn't make to the international news headlines.

OK - I give up - what's with all the horse-kicking stories? I believe that's five now.

Did you have a bad experience with horses as a child?

This summer, a young boy in this area, was kicked by his grandmother's horse in the head. The horse was out in the pasture. They never did report how it happened. The 5 year old did recover, but he will have to undergo a lot of therapy.

Are you the "when animals attack" specialist or something?

Anybody who is stupid enough to ride a motorscooter around horses at a show is looking for a kicking. The best mannered horses will spook and kick at a noisy moving object that buzzes behind them. And horse shows with their noise and commotion and strange horses in close quarters make almost every horse more edgy than normally.

And if eight is considered too young to know better, his PARENTS should have kept him off the scooter and away from the equines.

Horses and unsupervised dumb children don't mix. I have been kicked, stepped on, crushed against walls, bitten, covered with snot, and thrown from horses many times. Unless you are willing to be physically challenged by a 1,000 + lb. animal, you shouldn't mess with horsies.

Who was riding -- the horse or the kid? What was the horse riding?

Final observation: musta been one ugly kid, to spook a horse so....
