STANFORD, Calif. (AP) --
A worker at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center was injured Monday by what his co-workers called a "fireball" of electricity.
The unidentified worker was installing a small circuit breaker inside the two-mile long linear collider when an electrical arc of 480 volts shot unexpectedly toward a cabinet, sending the man reeling, knocking him down and setting him on fire.
"They described it as a fireball," said Neil Calder, a spokesman at SLAC. Co-workers at the scene quickly rolled the injured man over and extinguished the flames.
He has been transported to Valley Medical Center where he was being treated for second and third-degree burns.

Probably not. If they weren't then when the inspection agency shows up after this accident there will me more toast than any cooked sandwiches in the "unidentified workers" pockets.....
The firm I am with is doing Arc-Flash hazard identification calculations and the associated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) training for a few large industries. This can be a serious issue that the electrical industry is just recently (past couple of years) starting to deal with.
Oh boy. Poor bastard.
I remember fire balls; or was it great balls of fire?
Anyway, it's somewhere back there in my yut.
Hope the fellow's gonna be all right.
Goodness, gracious, great balls of fire!
Supposedly, the rule of thumb is:
For each 100V of potential, a human body will fly backwards one foot.
(Ask me how I know :o)

Those electrician's mates aren't very nice.
"Feel the power of Electrical Comedy...SHOCKED YO' A$$ ACROSS THE BERTHING COMPARTMENT! Somebody oughta find that funny!"
Two improperly grounded conduits. Managed to touch 'em both by accident. Stuned my beeber, I'm telli' ya!
It's no fun going to troubleshoot an outdoor metal can neon sign when it's been raining. That much voltage can arc across air.
It happened to me several times, but the worst was at a Mexican restaurant whose outdoor seating area gave the patrons a perfect view of me getting bit.
Embarrassing.
The worst would be the kid saying, "Wow, that was NEAT! DO IT AGAIN!"
The last name of the victim? Sparks.
Thats gotta hurt.
