Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Still round the corner there may wait...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Of course you can! Here's the latest. He built a box onto the side of his house so that he can install a fireplace. Well, he got the outside covered up quickly enough with plywood. But he spent a good deal of time standing inside the box hammering and singing "I love this bar!".

You could sort of have the "Mr Right" bit as the plot... mostly it's just ramblings but that supplies the conflict and pain and such. (I am of the opinion that without conflict, you don't really have a story.)
But then, I write stories by asking "Who does this hurt, and how can I hurt her more".

I bet he'd buy a toaster kit to build just so he can one-up his next door neighbor. "Naaaahow, this here is muh toaster. I made it muhself for muh missus."

I'm headed out to White Sands again week after next. Gonna get some good eats. She-who-needs-ritalin is going to order more ray-lenos.

Yeah, well, he's not the only author who recommends that method. And it's worked for me in the past!
Right, so my heroine has a lot of hurt in the past, but not much right now. Let's see... what can I do to her before the Big Happy Ending? At this point half my story's going to have to be flashbacks to get the Angst Quotient high enough.

I'm planning a majorly embarrassing moment that leaves her thinking he doesn't like her at all and/or that she's an idiot.
But in the end it'll work out. So yeah...that kinda sews things together.

That's the basis of my twisted fairy tale cycle- which is one possibility for nano. No happy endings.
Another possibility is still a germ-cell of an idea. Having to do with two brothers in a really bad situation. The smarter one cheated on a screening exam (played dumb) which resulted in the brother being chosen for a horrible task that would claim his life. The idea that he killed his brother motivates him to try to set things right. It's got potential.

I believe in "it all works out in the end". In fact I've decided to go for the sappy-happy, slightly implausible ending rather than the sadder but maybe more realistic ending. Heh, but I'm writing a fairy tale after all!

I could use a sappy ending...November is such a grey month!
But emotional torture will be kinda fun, too, so long as it isn't the end of the story.

I could use a sappy ending Speaking of sappy. Have you seen "Down with love"? It has Ewan McGreggor and Renee Zellwiger. Vey clever.
