The Hobbit Hole XVI - Still round the corner there may wait...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Still round the corner there may wait...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Thinking about making some of these...

Capt's Sourdough Flapjacks

2 cups ACTIVE starter
1 cup white flour
1 cup water
1 egg beaten
2 tbl cooking oil
2 tbl white sugar

mix all this stuff up real good-lay bowl beside camp fire or warm place-80-85 degrees-let sit 1 hour-it will be full of bubbles-do not stir down-in a hot greased skillet pour big spoonfull of batter and cook like regular flapjacks-these will be the best flapjacks you is ever going to eat-no baking powder taste-just a mild sourdough flavor.

break out the butter and syrup

That sounds soooo good...

Does anyone have an idea how long a 1-pound beef roast should take to cook?

I'll just use my meat thermometer, then.

I'm at the library again. The jedis wanted to play their Star Wars game, our connection is too slow, Steve was taking a nap, and the Mac is busted apparently since none of the extensions will turn on. So we're here. Joshua got a library card yesterday... he is playing on the computer three down from me. Matthew is at the table directly in front of me. Worked out perfect.

Heh heh! Yep. I just tell him "We're going to the library."

"Umph!" says he...but I know he's pleased. His wonderful devoted wife taking his offspring to the library...who could ask for better?

LOL

howdy... lazy Sunday here...

our neighbors with thepool had their HUGH annual fall/harvest/Halloween party yesterday... a 35 lbs whole ham from a hog they had butchered, three whole pork loins, several whole racks of pork ribs, pork steaks, and about 20 lbs of thick sliced, farm fresh bacon.... a dwarf's paradise... course, beer, wine, and bourbon were flowin' like water... when it got dark, there were hay rack rides and a bonfire with hotdogs and s'mores...

one of their nephews at theparty was at the 2nd debate... he was the young fella with glasses that asked about taxes... I thought that was one of the best questions of the nite... too bad it didn't get answered...

their family is pretty split... dems and Repubs... made for some interesting yet civil discussions... I believe I have a few of 'em re-thinkin' their positions on a few issues... doubt I led anyone from the darkside tho'...

If it hasn't finished cooking yet, it's 118 to 20 minutes a pound for medium rare at 350. Rolled roast needs 5 to 10 minutes more per pound. If you're using a thermometer, it should be 140 (rare) to 170 (well done). So says The Joy of Cooking.
