how to get rid of skunk smell?? Help

Someone hit a skunk on the road in front of my house and it stinks to high heaven. There's a big oily spot on the street which I think is where the smell is still coming from. The skunk is gone. I tried tomato juice, dawn, CLR and nothing has worked. Anyone got a secret?

Water mixed with vinegar, with a dash of dish soap, works surprisingly well. Saw it the other night on Mythbusters.

If it is in a safe area, douse the spot with charcoal lighter fluid, and ignite. The smell comes from a butyl mercaptan. High heat will convert that mercaptan to CO2, SO2, and other combustion products, which should not smell so badly.

Be certain that it is safe to burn the area, though. Would not want to cause an accident.

Thanks, that sounds like a good idea. As long as I stay upwind from it!!
Just tried the vinegar thing. I'll give it a while and see what happens. This is horrendous!

Kerosene or diesel. soak it. Light it. No problem. In fact, you wont even have to worry about the smell in the house, either.

To one quart of water add 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of Dawn and 1/4 cup of baking soda.
Mix the ingredients in a large bowl, because it will boil up.
This mix is basically an oxygen generator.
It is the oxygen which reacts with the thiols in the skunk stink to neutralize the odor.
Use it immediately. If it sits around, it will loose it's efficiency because the oxygen boils off.

Mercaptans are the chemical injected into natural gas to cause an odor (although not the exact same mercaptan as in skunk juice). Natural gas does not smell after it is burned; ergo burning mercaptans destroys the smell.

Guess working in the oil industry was good for something, but often I wonder....LOL.

Think about the smell of childrens' birthday party balloons. It's the same smell, just stronger. It won't seem so bad.

At least it works when you smell a skunk briefly while on the highway.
