Yes, he did use the word pretend but more as to pretending that we know exactly what's going to happen in January. He was setting up a hypothetical situation. If elections couldn't be held in all of Iraq but only in 75% or 80% of it, that would still be a good outcome.

Don't you understand what Rumsfeld is saying? He is trying to explain to obstinate and hostile reporters what the facts are and one tactic is offering hypotheticals and/or future anticipated plans like the elections.

What's the prob?

Of course one must be semi-smart and maybe a smidge sophisticated to get it....then again, I think the average American of goodwill understands.
