Ahhh, those 55 gallon ones sound good! If she's near you, I bet the soil is great up there. When I lived in Seattle, the produce from the gardens was huge.

Those books sound very good - I'll have to look for them. It's strange when I think about how I have the luxury of gardening and we aren't really counting on it for life and death... but if I only had my limited seeds and had to sustain us that way, that might be tricky. Don't know what I would feed the cats either. Guess they'd have to be let loose to hunt birds and lizards.

She lives farther out from Seattle...Closer to Black Diamond if you know where that is...The soil here where I live is mostly hardpan and gravel..Can grow stuff if you want, but the soil is much better in the valleys than on the hills.....

Yikes - that sounds tougher than the caliche down here! A lot of people here have raised garden beds because you can only dig down so far until you hit the desert cement.

The books can be a little hard to find...Most libraries don't have them...The County Library here borrowed them from other libraries around the country for me...I later ran them down in used book sites on the web and bought them, except for the Cave Paintings book, it is still available new....

Oh, yeah, I bet the moraines are not so great soil-wise... that sounds like tricky gardening indeed. We are at about 2800 feet and surrounded by mountains, but the ground is pretty fertile. I don't think the glaciers made it this far.
