I moved away to college at 17, but I STILL wasn't allowed to date! My parents did have a prearranged marriage for me from the time I was five. Too bad the guy they hand-picked ended up becoming a priest. Being a first-generation American, I'm used to such things...

A sign is displayed at a movie theater about the Afghan elections next to a Afghan restaurant in the Little Kabul area of Fremont, Calif. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004. Residents of Little Kabul, the nation's largest concentration of Afghan emigres, are watching closely as their homeland prepares to hold its first direct presidential election. As millions of voters in Afghanistan (news - web sites) get ready to cast ballots Saturday, some residents of Fremont's Little Kabul see the landmark vote as a crucial step for a budding democracy. I knew him, but he was in SoCal and I was in NoCal. I think I always suspected his true inclination even before I knew what that was. About 13 years ago, a group of us went to South America and he had recently become a priest. He smoked, drank, and womanized... but I think the womanizing was an act.

Lithuania. They were little when they escaped with their families during WWII and eventually were admitted into the U.S. They always wanted me to marry a good Lithuanian boy, but the first-generation Lith boys are mama's boys and cannot handle us strong Lith women. My grandmother was the first female lawyer in Lithuania... (back when being a lawyer was more honorable).

English is my second language and we all still speak Lithuanian to each other. My mom has no accent and my father only a slight accent when he speaks English.

Oh yes, and to add to my sob story, the second Lith man I was supposed to marry fell off a cliff at age 26 while hiking. I was 20 and on my way to see him.

My mother inlaw is first generation American also .. Her parents came from Italy
I never heard of any prearranged marriages from her .. and if there was, she didn't do it since she married a nice southern gentlemen
Lawyers are still honorable .. it's just that now a days, there aren't many of them left

Interesting about your mother in law... most of my best friends when I was growing up were Italian and I remember they were in love with Rocky (Sylvester Stallone). I don't mind lawyers except last night I heard Lurch explaining that he is one, so now that is on my mind.

Apparently! My youngest sister who just turned 28 had none of the pressure that I did about pre-planned marriages.

I don't mind lawyers except last night I heard Lurch explaining that he is one, so now that is on my mind I think he only became a lawyer because he killed his political ambitions with his anti war stunts in the 70's
After failing in his bid for congress, he then went to law school and shortly after that ( I think it was less then 2 yrs) he was elected District Attorney and then eventually Lt. Gov of Mass and then in 84 to the senate
So .. even though he is a lawyer .. he hasn't practiced law in over 25 years
