Resignation of Rather could be a false win as well as a HUGE missed opportunity

Now that Bill Clinton has officially taken over the Kerry campaign (Carville, et al), can anyone still doubt there is no coordination amongst the Kerry campaign, the DNC, Main Stream Media (MSM) and left-leaning 527's (i.e. MoveOn.org)? Even all of them as a group, as politically astute as they are, could not have imagined how much damage their first planned bombshell would cause and they certainly didn't expect the damage would be to their own candidate and party. But these are the same people who successfully changed the serious charge of lying before a federal grand jury to "it's just about sex and, thus, a personal matter". Republicans fell into the trap then and it is happening again! These people may have ideas dangerous to our country but they are the uncontested masters at "damage control". They are not dumb! They certainly did not want this but they are already changing the discussion from Main Stream Media's left-leaning bias being fully exposed for all to see to "Dan Rather lied". Rather will stone wall for another week while conservatives become more and more vitriolic in their criticism with many going over the edge in "calling for his head". He will then resign in a tearful "I'm also one of the victims" confession then adamantly refuse to divulge any information on the source(s). He'll fall back on the time (and legally) honored custom of protection and confidentiality of news sources. Those who will consider his resignation as "mission accomplished" will have fallen into the same trap the Republicans fell into with Bill Clinton and will have been tricked by the same people. By the election, Dan Rather will be forgotten except for, perhaps, some "sympathy vote" he'll produce for John Kerry. He will have plenty of time to build his "victim hood" between now and election day. The liberal MSM bias that has gone unchecked for 40+ years will be safely back behind the curtain and "news" will continue to be reported as before. NOTHING will have changed! Except those mentioned above will have all learned they can no longer say/print anything they like confident it will go uncontested. They'll just be (a lot) more careful in the future. Yes -- Fox News, Talk Radio and the Internet are the main sources for news for many but the majority of voters who still just occasionally read the front page of their local newspaper before turning to the sports or comics section or get their "news" from one of the three major networks will continue to be the dominant voting block for many years to come. Probably all of you reading this "blog" get much of your news from the Internet but you're in the minority and will be for a long time to come. As of yesterday, something like 27% of people surveyed (who had heard of the story) believed the documents to be authentic. Why? Some are die-hard Kool-Aid drinkers of the DNC but most said so because the MSM told them what to think. If the RNC and conservatives in general (not always the same people), think "battle won" when Dan Rather resigns soon and they then stop there, the liberal media will have dodged a bullet that will not come around again for many years if ever. Am I the only one who sees this?

Is that like the sympathy vote that Gerald Ford got for Nixon? I'll take my chances with Rather going down.

If Rather leaves CBS before his scheduled retirement next year it will be because he died. With guys like him and Bill Clinton, it's all about their legacy. As they feel the tug of their own mortality, they become desperate to leave something behind to anchor them to this life. The pharoahs tried it too, but it just doesn't work.

Dan Rather is not going to "tearfully resign", and the liberal media will NOT have "dodged a bullet that will not come around again for many years if ever". Dan Rather will continue, albeit somewhat contrite, until he retires after the election. The MSM has taken a bullet, and more will be coming, thanks to "buckhead" et al.

I have great faith in President Bush, and the Republican Party.

Nice try, though.

Ok,then what should the Republicans and Conservatives and Talk Radio and Free Republic be doing instead?

I got to admit one thing I find REALLY troublesome is how some "Conservatives" always run around screaming "OH LOOK OUT, the Sky is falling" but never offer any solutions. Some of you have an almost mythical belief in the omnipotence of the Left and spend far too much time worrying about how everything is a huge trap. Maybe we should spend more time thinking about what WE are doing to them. The CBS news report was suppose to be the Keystone to this massive DNC "Favorite Son" ad campaign to slander Bush. It blew up in their faces. The left really can be this stupid. It is NOT some massive plot to get sympathy votes for Kerry. Go look at ANY of the polls. 3/4s of the respondents say NONE of this Vietnam era crap matters to them. If the Left wants to keep pouring resources and effort down this meaningless rat hole LET them. The best way WE can keep them wasting their resources is by keeping the pressure on Rather. Keep them responding to US instead of moving on to the next lie in the slander campaign. In fact, if you are right, the SAME issue is working FOR Bush the same way it worked for Clinton. Instead of buying the lies against a President they like, the average people are looking at the DNC and CBS and saying "These people are far too extremists to be trusted, I better vote for Bush because he is far more middle of the road then them". Meanwhile while the Left is putting all this time and effort into engaging us, Bush is out there talking Jobs, Health Care, Security, Taxes etc etc etc in the average people's LOCAL media

Since Republicans rarely stand up for anything these days, I welcome those who start chanting that Dan's head should be removed rather (rather! Har! Har!) than remain.

This would also be quite a coup for bloggers everywhere, and we're certainly getting some well-deserved attention out of this whole ugly mess already. It will make the media sit up and take notice that their own days could well be numbered.

I'm votin' for the guillotine (sorry, that's french).
