The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

How nice...A medicine hat paint. The Western Indians, felt they had special powers and protection.

Medicine hat is an arrangement of colored areas on a predominantly white horse, specifically a colored spot that covers both ears and the poll.

Thanks - I had forgotten that term - Medicine hat Paint - I've just spend awhile reading about them through Google search. Very interesting history - and my dd said "he looks regal". One of the sites I visited used that same terminology ...I've never really cared for animals with blue eyes (except Siamese cats ) but I may have to change my mind....

My horse and I were coming home 'round dinner time one day, and he heard pellets being dropped into the bucket, so he let out a huge buck and took off right to the barn door. Nearly beheaded me. He pitched a fit, we had a little converstation and to do, and BACK out on the trail we went, and I didn't let him have dinner for about an hour afterwards. He never tried it again.

OK - We did it.... we bought this horse... She's on a 7 day trial, but we wrote the check. They promised not to cash the check until we had tested her at home for a week. They'll bring her on Sunday.

This is not the horse we left to go look at. That horse turned out to be a sad lame case. More on that later. :~(

This was another horse from the paper, seven years old, Registered Half Arab X Mustang mare. Done 4H, done trails, the daughter lost interest and stopped riding.

She's underweight on first impression, but I don't worry about her gaining weight at our place. Point out anything you see but I was impressed with her legs looking sound and straight.... she's barefoot and has never been shod - they say she doesn't need it ;~) She is not a fancy mover like Bay is, but has a nice fast business-like walk, and overall, ~easier~ gaits to sit than Bay has.

This is the owner (or, rather, the owner's mom)

ecurbh up:

Some other chick up:

Whew.... I'm nervous! and excited. This family raised this horse from a foal. They owned mom and the Arabian dad... and lost the mother when she was a week old... She was hand fed, and is very personable and easy to handle. So far. Like Cindy, I will now have to see what personality we get when she gets some groceries in her. ;~D

I love bays:), Looks like you did real good. The potential to be a really nice looking horse is definitely there with good groceries.

How tall is she, what's her name??

Looks like she shows more mustang traits then Arab to me.??

Can't wait for you to get her home, are you going to try to get her to some trails, or just try her at the house?

Her legs do look good. She may be a little underweight, but at least she looks shiny and healthy. What I can tell from her feet they look in good condition too.

No one was posting during:).

Bush did OK. I don't think either of them knocked a homerun, altho, I liked Bush's comment about the "global test" thing, and I didn't like Kerry saying he'd shut down our nuclear program.

I hope so.... She has a real pretty exotic head and nice expression. She seemed real quiet and easy at home.... we'll see how she in ~new~ places on Sunday! She's a tall 15 hands.... she's just two inches shorter than Bay and probably 200 pounds lighter.

Can't wait for you to get her home, are you going to try to get her to some trails, or just try her at the house?

We are definately going to work with her a lot at home. I would love to take her somewhere.... We'll see if we can arrange it!
