Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
That's an idea. At least I wouldn't embarrass my husband so bad:')
I'd tie her out where she has problems, but I would also try to make it where she can't see can't see other horses. Sounds like she is very very herd bound, probably from being in a dude string. It doesn't sound like she is "afraid" to be there, just doesn't like being there, or anywhere without a buddy. Too bad you can't keep her in a pen by herself. Not in a stall tho.
I think that is why I don't have trouble with horses being herd bound. I keep mine all in seperate runs. They can see each other but since they are all seperated from each other they get use to seeing each other wonder off, then come back. It also makes them, IMO, more bonded with me. I guess I'm better then nothing.

A friend of mine said she'd had luck selling the horses she raises on Ag Direct. But another friend said he'd had some real nut-cases contact him after posting a couple of horses there. They were trying to scam him out of some money. One wanted to send him a check for more than he wanted for the horse and have him send them the difference. Another wanted to pay him half up front, pick up the horse, then pay the rest later. It was really weird. I guess you have to be real careful on both ends of the transaction. I haven't talked to him in a while so I don't know if he ever had any luck or not.
Oh, and I would have her saddled while she is tied. Of course you know I'm a firm believer in horses standing tied:)
But even if she can see other horses, she will be seperated from them and she will see them come and go and won't be able to follow, and will get use to horses leaving her. It will probably take awhile to get her over that, but tieing her up seperated from others on a very consistent basis will help.
Dude string horses are usually good about standing tied, because they are usually saddled and tied up in a group, waiting for customers. So standing by herself saddled will help if it's done alot.

A neighbor of mine had this happen. The difference was supposedly to have the horse shipped to the buyers. They sent her a cashiers check. When she went to cash it and send the money thru Western Union, they told her she needed to check that is was a legitmate check. They had had alot of this sort of thing happening. Turned out it was a scam. She would have been liable for the money if WU hadn't caught it. Becky
Thanks. Yeah that's what I'm thinking. For safety my plan was to grad wean her away fronm Okie while I'm riding but I wanted to put her where no horses near when tied her up. I think she's both herd and barn sour though caz I remember when I would ride her with Okie present it would be a turn issue when we walked behind her stall.
I've used mine for hauling a few bales of hay to the trailer, for hauling manure, for rocks, bricks, old boards, the list just goes on. I wouldn't be without it anymore. The only bad thing about 'em is they're a little unwieldy going across a slope coz you can't keep 'em level like you can with a single wheel. You've got to let the downhill handle go or let that shoulder be lower or something.
You have taught me well lol. (It worked great with Okie after I left him in the stalls too long) Gotta go to work now. Talk to yall later.
Horses will always turn to the closet way "home". That's why it's good to not make coming back to the barn the most pleasant part of the ride for them. After I ride, I never feed for at least an hour, lots of times when I get back they stand tied with the saddle still on for awhile, or I will actually get back on and ride again. That way coming back isn't all that great of a thing, because they start figuring out that just because I go home I'm not necessarily going to be done, and get fed. Sometimes, when I'm out on the trail I'll stop, and get off and let them graze too. That way they figure out that sometimes good things happen away from home.
Make sense?

Yeah, I need to go get started on Trash. I guess I won't be going to the arena, my truck still isn't running. May just work Rusty and Harley here in the arena after Trash. It's nice now, not having to rush in the mornings to beat the heat.
Becky
Cindy, I've been thinking. If you do tie her, I would then saddle Okie and ride him past her and out of sight, then come back and leave again. Do that a few times. She is liable to throw a fit. but just tie her short, make sure she can't break loose, and let her. Keep doing it till she lets him go and come without a fuss. Just a suggestion.
Becky
Wow,you learn something new every day. Fancy that. :-)
Looking forward to your pictures tomorrow:)

It's obvious, by the looks of Rusty. Nice horse. He looks a lot like that big roan gelding, at the sale. Western horses (part of Country, not style of riding) tend to be a lot bulker, than in these here parts. That is what sold us on the filly, she had some decent forearm and gaskin muscles.
I am trying to get caught up, on all the posts here at work. The weather has been really nice, and no rain for over a week. Not much time for surfing. With mowing, replacing fence and general clean up before the snow flies, we have been very busy.
Check out her right shoulder/neck area. Does that look like a dent to you? She is very pretty thou.
BTW, good job on handling those rude posters, on that smoking thread. :)
Thanks:). Rusty has really developed since I got him. He's gotten a bit soft this summer as he was off all summer with a respiratory infection due to his panting due to his not sweating:)
I'm riding a big throughbredy type quarter horse now for a girl. I mostly don't like them because they are just so darn tall and it's hard to get my butt up on them:) After riding him, then going back to Rusty I feel like my feet are dragging the ground.
Becky
It could be a dent... Hard to say!
I agree those folk were rude on that thread! Most folk disagreed with me and so does most of my family.... but it was ~just~ a conversation ;~D
We're off to go look at a horse.... 15 year old Arab mare... experienced trail horse, bargain basement price.
Hopefully we won't buy the first horse we look at... unless she's the right one! ;~D
Can't wait to hear about the horse!
I have a computer question. I found a site that you can advertize horses for free with a picture. But the file size of my picture is to big for the site to take. Can you tell me how to shrink it? Right now it's at like 59000 bytes, and it can't be over 35000. I think:) Does my question make sense? :)

I fully expected NOT to like him after hearing the description - paint gelding - 14yo - super sweet - but get this - all white with a brown head!! The picture I had in my mind was like one of those weird cartoons - cut the head off of a brown horse and stick it on a white horse....
We saw him from the road as we drove up to the barn - he was standing - regal looking - at edge of fence looking out over everything. His entire head was not brown - he has brown ears and irregular brown splotches around his forehead and down around his eye area... rest of head is white...
After our App. that is greyish white with brown spots - he looks SO white - almost like the horse Galdalf rode in Lord of the Rings... mostly what I liked was his stance and how he carried his head - He is a nice size - 15.2 - and just looks classy.
so he passed the "look" test - and I will go ride him - hopefullly tomorrow.
You're next - did you like what you saw today....
