The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

We have one like that at the stables. It's used for birthing and also seperating the foal from momma without so much stress. I talked with my husband about some minor modifications to the tack room. He thought it was a good idea.

I like the sound of your floor much better. Even, and much more hygenic, especially for foaling. Splinters could be a big problem with the rr ties, especially because they are treated.

Having the concrete is really nice too when or if you have infection or disease because you can clean it.

For these guys, a long shed split into two large loafing shed type stalls would work just fine... If needed, they could be closed in with pasture gates but otherwise open for them to come and go, most of the time.

The thing with us is that the list is like raising rabbits. My husband probably works 50-60 hrs a week and weekends tend to be catch up instead of rest and fun. We were doing ok until I started working full time. We just need a little help. Esp now. I have a job that has flexable hours but Monday I'm accepting a position elsewhere that I'm a little unsure about. Things work out though. Just a lot of praying and maybe a handy man, if it's God's will.

That's great. Talk to a lot of people and get their list of I wish I had on their barns. Check out all the tack rooms you can. Since you have the time, you can plan a barn to incorporate the best of everything you find and figure out how to do it without it costing a fortune.

LOL! I don't think you'd get concrete to set up in this cold either... you'd find the horses just stuck in it by morning. so you prolly better postpone that part too ;~D

That would be nice if leather won't mold out there. I keep my saddles and bridles in the house because it's too damp outside unless heated.

I have two loafing sheds 10X24 that are divided with a panel into two 10X12 areas. They work great and I can put up four horses there, all seperately. Then in the front pasture, I have a 12X24 that is open on all sides. It is split down the middle and I have two horses on each side. They use it to get out of the weather or the sun. I just have to put horses there that get along.

havent had a problem with mold at all! My friend used to repair saddles and tack, so i know to always have a heater on low in the building they are in.
