Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
See - perfect all the way around.
You bet!
I think the messages sent to everyone whilst James(deaconjim) was on here will get me a stable sooner than expected! LOL (he loves his workshop just the way it is!)
We visited some people today that packed railroad ties down for the floor of their barn. Have you ever heard of that? At my stables, it's high and dirt except for concrete runners.
wasn't it uneven?
workshops/garages are their sanctuaries I think. I organized my husbands once. It looked so nice and every thing had a place. He was mad at me for days.
It was but not more than a rough road though.
LOL i dont think James knows what organised is!
He is the most diorganised person i have ever met!

oops oops oops! LOL
In our eyes only. Ask him. I bet he will tell you he knows what corner or drawer or place on the floor where everything is:')
I would think thats more trouble than needed though, I have never seen a stable with that kind of floor.
I'd really worry about splinters coming off them - they are highly treated and that would cause one nasty injury and infection.
Our stall floors are dirt with rubber mats on top of that. Our dirt here is very sandy so it's porous and it takes several mats per stall to cover. That way urine runs off the mats into the cracks and is absorbed into the soil.
By the way - speaking of your wants. This is the coolest thread. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1308793/posts
LOL.you would hope so, but no. He can lose a hammer whilst sitting down and not moving! I am not kidding!~ I have watched!
me either. It looked like a lot of work. We already have a blue print for ours (hubby drew it up). We just need a place to build it:')
we just need the time! We have plenty of space etc but need another 20 hrs in the day. Sleep would be nice too! LOL
I saw it. I'm usually called a bull dog . No one better ever call me a poodle though:')
When we had our barn built, I had the builder modify it so that the wall between two stalls on each side of the alleyway could be unlatched and swung back against the back walls. That way, two 12X12 stalls became a 12X24 stall for foaling.
Most of the time, my barn is five stalls and a tack/feed room but when I have mares foaling, it becomes a three stall. The stud still gets his, but the other four become two.
sounds great, guess i had better get lots of nails out for James for tonight, and maybe a spare flashlight! :O)
And expensive.... RR ties aren't cheap.
My barn is concrete with rubber mats on top and bedded with shavings. Concrete is nice for a very flat stable and cleanable surface. Yes, pee gets down underneath, but if needed, it is easy to soak up and dry out the floor underneath with some 'stall-dry' absorbant. It's easier than dirt, that will soak it in. Dirt floors underneath are fine, but either way, mats make stalls easier to keep stink-free for the long haul.
