Oh, ok. I was putting a gee to it
. How's lightening taking to fatherhood? He bothering Misty?
He's too far away, but must know, because he is running laps around his field! It's his first baby and he's a proud Daddy ! LOL
Or wants Momma to come play! :')
He only THINKS he wants Mama to come play! :0
we need to go and grab a coffee and check on the horses. We'll be on here later :)
Glad to hear the babe is up and looks healthy. Sorry it had to happen in crappy weather. Are you planning to have a vet out for a wellbaby check? I'd advise doing that until you have a few of these under your belt, but it can be done at a convenient schedule in the next day or two.
Ditto, and do it right next to the mother, makes both of them easier. Have you read books and seen pictures of early foal handling? She shouldn't be led or controlled with any halter until she is a little stronger (but don't wait too long - wait a week or two) but rather held and moved back and forth with arms or soft lines around her chest in front and around her butt behind. very good to constrain her in your arms like this early on and often and prevent her from moving for just a few seconds up to a minute. Its very good preparation for establishing your dominance quietly, while petting and soothing of course. Make all the imprinting mostly fun. Trust is the best early lesson.
Why the wait? is it a physical concern or you just don't want to introduce the halter during imprinting and scare them.
Physical. Their little necks aren't strong enough to take a struggle or resist against it. And they aren't steady enough on their feet and often fall backwards if they panic. They just aren't ready and are too easily hurt. If they've been handled a lot with lines around chest and butt, they'll understand to submit to pressure without it being on their head. But then even when haltered, if they pull back at the halter, don't fight it there... push them at the chest and butt. It's a two person job.
After a couple weeks of that, the butt rope and second person become less nessesary and they are strong and steady enough that if they rear, you can hold and give them some corrective yanks successfully and without hurting anyone. Foals should never be left haltered loose. They'll get it caught on posts or feet and really get hurt. Course I don't think adults should be left haltered either.
wonderful advice, we have already got his from a friend who has done a lot of foaling. We dont want to rush anything, let the foal become used to us, just with our hands and then in a week, go onto a soft line just introduced to her on different parts. No pressure. Just fun and love.
Misty seems pretty happy to have us there and even seems to lead the foal so that it is close to us.
The children are very excited, and have looked out of the window, but we dont want too much fuss until later.
Ok. I have a couple more questions but I have to go right now. Eddie wants to go to town. How do yall get anything done when it's cold.? I just want to sit huddled in a blanket. Maybe this head cold has a lot to do with it but I've been very sedative this weekend:'(
just introduced to her
oops..........him! I think, we should know when I go back out in a second. See you later!
I believe strongly in a HOT TODDY! It's acholoic so no driving or anything, but its an age old remedy for colds and is the only thing that my husband has found that works! To sonme it tastes good too!
Recipe should be on internet somewhere!
1 shot Scotch Whisky
1 tbsp Honey
1 bag Tea
boiling Water
In a standard coffee mug put the scotch, honey and tea bag. Pour boiling hot water to fill mug. Steep for about one or two minutes. Then remove and dispose of tea bag
Right now she's little enough to hold her and move her around just in your arms. I wouldn't worry about lines so much for another couple days.
I am looking for a picture of the next step on line and not able to find it. But I make a 'baby suitcase', when they are either too big to bear hug, or you want to introduce them to the next step, maybe 3-4 days from now. To make the 'baby suitcase' take a long soft line (cotton line rather than web lunge line) and take it around the chest so it could be held over her wither to stop her from going forward, then take the rest of the line and go around the butt, up to meet in the same place. You should then be able to hold this package in one hand like a suitcase handle, leaving the other hand free to pet her, handle her or whatever.
Leading at first, make things easy on yourself. Lead the mom around and lead the babe to follow, with your suitcase... She'll want to go, you can just control that she does it at your speed. After a little while, try small circles away from mom, expecting a little resistance, and then return her to mom again. work with her only 10 minutes or so at most in one session, and always end on a good note when she's relaxed.
Your big challenge I think will be in providing a dry place for her to sleep out of the wet They lay down and sleep a LOT. Got a place you can put dry shaving down that would get her off the snow or mud?
Fantastic - waiting for pictures :)
Have you put iodine on the navel? Has the baby had a bowel movement? Is the baby nursing? Did placenta drop? Is it complete?
Don't rush things. Don't work with baby unless someone is holding mom. Run you hands over his ears, down his legs. But let him get lots of rest for awhile. Don't try halter and leading right now, plenty of time in the future for that.
Just got finished having some quality time with the colt, and it went pretty well.
It's definitely a he, so Adge it is. He's chestnut like his Sire, with a white star on the forehead and white around the muzzle. The mane and tail are black like Misty's, and white legs. The hooves are ivory white.
He's a bay then.... Although his base color may change quite a bit when he sheds out his baby coat.
How did he like being touched?
