The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yeah I was thinking the other night that there ought to be a monitor that you could hook up to her belly to monitor for contractions:')

There is such a thing. A lot of big farms use them. Don't know how they work though.

I'm a nurse and I tend to think from a human viewpoint:') I also like my comforts. I was sitting here with my cold thinking if I'm gonna dream I might as well dream big and make a sick room in my barn so if I have to spend the night out there I could be comfortable. You know ac/heated. A couch, cable phone and a computer:')

Make a tack room - office combination, panel the inside of it and drop the ceiling. Help keep the tack clean too. Electricity for your a/c and a small refidge for meds. Keep the feed room seperate and you won't have a problem with mice, etc.

I was even thinking if you could recess back enough from kick range I could even have a window with a stall view.. Combining a tack room an excellent idea . That way it would stay usuable.

You put the window in with a set back and on the stall side, flush with the stall walls, cover the window with a metal mesh.

To: CindyDawg; All

This is deaconjim. We've been out foaling around! Misty fooled us last night. We decided late last night that she was quiet and not planning any action, so we finally gave up and went to bed. We woke up this morning to a new foal. I don't think it was even an hour old when we saw it. I'm afraid Misty didn't let us do a lot of imprinting, but we did manage to do a little.

We aren't sure, but we think it is a he, and if so his name is to be Thunder (stands to reason, since his dad is Lightning).

Pictures will be a day or two coming.

Yeah, Sugar is due about now as well. She is not bagged up but her backside is hollow and her belly is pointed. She is huge!

I don't think so.

Be sure to look around for a rectangular thing (don't know what it's called), but it looks like liver. The foal had it in his mouth and spits it out after birth.Keeps them from swallowing fluid. You're suppose to throw it up on the roof for good luck:)
(Old wives tell), but I have found it a few times.

You can put a halter on the mother so you can imprint the foal easier, if you have a protective mother. It will not only teach the foal but mom will learn not to worry when you're there.
