The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

:) Glad you got your nnnnn fixed. Nice having enough left overs for a couple more meals isn't it? I always hate having to cook after spending a day doing it for a big meal. My dishwasher has to have everything rinsed off so it doesn't do a lot of good except get the dishes out of my sight.

We now have snowballs in baggies in the freezer. The 4 y/o wants to know if he can use them for a snowball fight later. Some things never change:')

How many acres would you need to have a grazing pasture and a rotation pasture. Could Okie and Sarah Lee graze together? How many horses per acre? Don't worry. I'm not doing anything radical. We are going to make an offer on that 20 acres but I need some of it for other stuff. I also want it big enough for say 4 horses in case I add in the future so that I wouldn't have to expand.

Yes, Sarah and Okie could graze together. All adult horses could go together as long as none of them was a stud. I had eight acres in NC, planted in rye (no fescue please) and had five horses at the time. It was divided into a 1 acre, two acre, three acre with the other two acres in the two barns, paddocks, garden, house and yard. They never ate down any pasture.

Here I don't have any pasture, no water rights for irrigation.

I figured it was enough but I need 2 barns (one my shop) and want an arena and round pen plus a house and a place for another small house or mobile home for someone to help me watch the place. I also want a very small orchard area. Lot's of wants huh?:')

Gotta have the wants to get started :)

Twenty acres will be plenty of room.

It will just take time. Getting the horses there the first priority so the pasture fee going to land payments.

O.K., there is sleet falling, it's getting colder, and Misty is leaking milk. Is this a good sign?

The sleet falling is not a good sign ;~D... but they will sometimes leak milk when they are really full and they move around. It doesn't necessarily mean it's imminent. Hopefully she'll wait till the weather clears.

We have been recovering from all our good cheer from yesterday. Haven't done anything but lay in our recliners all day:)

We were reading a thread about someone who had a liberal at their dinner table, and was asking what to do. LOL...4 years ago we about had a major split in my family at Christmas over politics, I think we are just now recovering:). Politics was not mentioned yesterday.

But man, we are 'xhausted! Gonna hit the couch, hurts my eyes to look at the screen :~D

Glad you got your N fixed!

Misty is the most protected which is a good thing. She has a dry spot which is out of the wind etc.

Can you shelter them from the wet stuff? That was what bothered me, having them in the cold and wet. Some people here didn't have a choice though.
