The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Is there anything I need to watch for so they don't get them too warm?

The most important thing is that the blankets fit. The belly straps should be snugged up where they don't hang down.... not cinched up tight, but no big loose loop they can get a foot through if they lay down. And after putting it on, re-check the straps after they have moved around a little or as the blanket shifts around to see that they haven't loosened up.

I guess that's why the owner was talking about sizes. She was throwing numbers out that didn't mean anything to me yet. She has a loaner that she thinks will fit Okie but looking for a smaller one for Sarah Lee.

Measurement from front of chest to their butt... in inches... 65"-75" for most horses.

Cyn's is way to big, but it came with her and will do for this year. The belly straps had to be knotted because they were too long.

My husbands birthday is the 24th. We snack that day. I usually make a big batch of fudge too. The little ones get to open one gift. Christmas day is as formal, as two people always on the go can formalize:') Sigh. I'm cutting back to 3 days a week in Jan.

I'm baaack! For a short while. Have to get online on the twins' 'puters so they can do school and catch up. LOL!

Here's a pic of Jake...aka...*donkey boy*..butthead..spoiled brat..jughead..mr. intuition..dizpozall! That snapper was OLD and big and mean. Didn't faze Jakey a BIT! I think he was fascinated with the hissing sound.(I poked at the turtle with my pack of smokes and that sucker bit them in HALF!)

We get lots of large turles around here. My husband stops and picks them up and sets them off the road.

There was an article about a guy that was hit, while moving a turtle from the road. The story didn't faze DH though. I rescue stray dogs. He saves turtles:')

There is a very old pony that came to the stables this summer. She looked like she was wearing a coat. So much thick hair. Everyone took turns brushing her. She felt like she has fever under all of it. If she had been mine I would have buzz cut her. I never have seen a horse express so much pleasure getting groomed as she did:') Someone couldn't keep her and the owner is letting her live at the stable. They estimated she is in her thirties but she is a cutie.

Heavy coat in summertime is a symptom of Cushings Syndrome. Very common downfall of old horses. The coat will sometimes get quite curly as well as long, and never sheds out. Many people do clip them for comfort.

Cushings can sometimes be treated for a good long while, sometimes not. Many get laminitis as an additional symptom and don't recover from that. My friend's horse who I attended or him when the horse was euthanized, had Cushings.
