Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Is your weather normal. I would have thought your being so far north, you'd get alot more cold and snow.
Becky
Animals in general are goofy sometimes. My new cat has been having to live outside ever since I brought the Christmas tree in because he seems to think that since there's a tree in the house, it must be ok to pee under it. But he's got plenty of warm places to sleep out in the shed. I even put a heating pad out there for him.
The temperature is supposed to drop drastically this evening, with freezing rain/sleet/snow a definate possibility. The weather has been weird around here lately. 17 one day, 50 the next, you don't know what to expect. I've got to go open up the barn for the mares to get in tonight. They're ok with rain, or freezing weather, but not both at the same time.
I'm heading home now. They've let us off from work early for the holidays. Woo Hoo! Ya'll have a Merry Christmas!
I'm going to see how he does with the trailer, if that doesn't work, I'm going to get a doghouse, I'd like to figure out some way that he can stay warm enough but still be loose outside. I still have coyote problems.
Becky
By now we should be getting frosts at night, warming to above freezing during the day and it typically may have snowed once already even if it didn't stay... So it's unseasonably warm, and dry... remaining a pretty constant 44-50 day and night. Some kind of 'Pineapple express' where the jet stream is way south, bringing our air in from Hawaii instead of Alaska. Most ski areas who typically can open for Thanksgiving opened way latethis month, many with a lot of snow making machine help.
But historically, January is our coldest month.
Grizzly has plenty of places to go that block the wind and rain/snow, but he insists on sleeping up here on the patio on the swing:). Maybe the cushion is comfy.
Becky
AWWWWW
Well once I understood how dry it is there, it made sense. I just always assume everyone has the same conditions we have:). When we have dry summers we can have problems with hoofs cracking.
Becky
One other thought on the shoeing discussion.
When I tried the barefoot thing last summer, I used hoof dressing to help harden the foot. Well I learned something. My horses did not have problems with cracks or bad chipping. The farrier when he came said the horses all had nice hard feet, they were just wore off too short. Sooooo...my conclusion is "hard" feet I guess helps keep the foot from breaking apart, but will not keep them from normal wear or being gimpy. Their gimpiness is what made it soooo unpleasant to ride.
Becky
I'm such a moron:). I just got to looking for my Christmas table cloths, they were in a laundry hamper, I don't use much...from last year:(. Wonder if they'll come clean???
Becky
Heh... I bet they will come clean.... If not, you can set the casserole on the spill spot. Are they bleachable?
One is, white, the big one for the big table, the other is a green one for the smaller snack table.
They're washing now. Fingers crossed. Table clothes are expensive.
BEcky
They are expensive for linen ones.
I have my moms and grandmother's old linens, never much thought to storing them properly, and they were very yellowed with age and had some stains. I really wanted to use them on the food tables at our wedding, and they cleaned up beautifully with regular laundering and just a little bleach.
These aren't linen ones. The thing about the white one is I had trouble finding one that size. My dining room table was my mother's and it's real long. I imagine if I wanted to pay alot I could get them easier, but since I only use if so seldom I hate to pay that much. I'm not sure what happen to the ones my mom used. Dad probably still has them somewhere or got rid of them not realizing what they were.
Becky
I really enjoy setting the table for Christmas. Several years ago I found a really neat set of Christma China, not expensive, and some matching glasses, lots of red and green in them so they look pretty on the white table clothe, with red napkins, and gold flat ware:)
Becky
That's nice... I guess in my family I am still the kid who goes to dinner, I've never been the one to design and decorate for my own...
We don't have a Christmas dinner tradition.... Thanksgiving yes, but Christmas is all about hanging out and snacking. My Dad's lady friend has tried to bring more and more organization into our lives, but all she's managed to succeed with are fancier snack tray items... ;~D
What really is frustrating to me is that we have to get prepared but a lot of the time it doesn't get as low or as bad as predicted. I know the guys give us the best info they have and I appreciate it but funny things happen as storms start dropping here.
:) I'll tell you with each passing year I'm getting more and more use to the idea of letting the kids take over this tradition:). I've had to do it a lot longer then I should have if my mother had not passed away. Being the only female at the time it fell to me. Lot of work and it's gotten more and more expnsive to do too. I spend probably $250 for this one meal and the snacks for the day.
Anyway I think the tablecloth is gonna be fine. Part of our meal is you know a pasta with marinara sauce....I was worred about those stains, mostly at the place Charlie sits:)
BEcky
They shouldn't be encouraged to run around in blankets, they'll sweat easily in them, like you would running in a coat, but in stalls, they'll be fine. They self-manage their own activity if they are hot or cold.
Do you have extended family coming also then? Or just your own kids and their families?
