The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Look at 5349 and tell me what you see there that I typed that triggered a "hot lovers" porn pop up. LOL

Ummm... "happy" ? It definately sounds like you have spyware on your computer, particuarly of the porn variety. Do you have a spyware program that'll get rid of it?

Thanks,guys.. I went to visit with her family friday nite and they are all ok, considering.

My husbands stepmom (who is closer to him than his real mom) is also dying of cancer. She's at home on hospice.

Then I watched the National Finals Rodeo and started feeling sorry for myself because I don't have a horse ..lol.

All in all a sucky weekend..

I'm living vicariously through you guys lately ..

The good news is that both these ladies love the Lord and are/were at peace with dying.

We mostly grieve for the families and their loss.

My life is good, I really can't complain. Thanks for listening!

How far north are you going?

Western South Carolina. I'm about 40 miles south of Asheville, NC, 30 miles east of Clayton, GA and 15 miles west of Clemson University.

Winnie is sure appropriately named then - she's a winner.

I am so bad about checking the for sale sites, and adoption sites and I don't have the money or the room for another horse. Just this year I've bought five horses that desperately needed a home. I really have to stop looking :)

Actually, you are exactly right, the cloud cover acts as a blanket and keeps the warmth near the earth. (I always wanted to be a meteorologist. I'm trying to get one of my kids to go into that field)

Why are you having to work on getting your confidence back? Did you have an accident?

Well no. But every since I've started riding again after a couple of years out of the saddle, I've lost all confidence in my riding abilities. But now I'm slowly starting to get them back. I sued to be pretty fearless about the different horses that I rode, and now I want the most bombproof horse that you can possibly get. :-)

Hoooo boy, I'm with you. I used to do some of the dumbest things on my horse when I was growing up. Now that I'm older, I look for the quietest, laziest, laid back horses I can find and then buy them.

Falling off hurts considerably more at age 43 than it did at 14. And when I was younger, I didn't have a bunch of kids depending on me to take care of them.

I like to just look too. Sometimes I go to auctions just to look and learn. I see a lot of behavior problems there. My little grandson just reminded me of this. He was chewing on my desk. I told him to stop cribbing. Everyone got a laugh about that.

Maybe you could go take a lesson. Not probably that you need it but just to keep your skills up and get away and ride awhile.

Well to be honest, I'm only at the ripe old age of 21 :-) I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I don't really know these horses more than when I ride them, whereas I've always worked at a barn and rode... not just taken lessons. So I knew all of those horses better. Does that make any sense at all? Maybe it's just all in my head.

21 and you almost have your masters? Just how smart are you, Beaker? :')

You're 21??? Oh gawd, I feel so old.

You make perfect sense. When I find the time to ride everyday, I have plenty of confidence in my ability. If I go without riding for a couple of months, it takes me awhile to get my confidence back on track.

Good Morning!
Cold here this morning, about 31. I hate it when it gets this cold but we have so many mosquitos still that I guess this freeze is a good thing.

Anybody ever teach a horse to drive? I'm seriously thinking of teaching Tuffy to drive and I don't know how to go about it. I do have a miniature that drives but I didn't teach him, he already knew how when I bought him.

Drive, as in pulling a buggy? Can you do it with a high spirited horse though? I don't know why but I always thought they were old horses that couldn't get horsey , even if they wanted to:')

They don't die here though. It gets cold and wet and the bugs go away. Then it warms up and the flys come out (not as bad though) and the sqeeters too if we have a lot of standing water. Seems like the cold just makes um mad:')

I've taught horses to drive.... are you curious about the ground driving part running behind or does he do that?

Coming from driving my stallion at Arab shows, I'd say yes... High spirited is different than unbroke. A horse should be well-broke, but many driving horses are chosen for flashy high stepping movement, and high spirit. Pleasure driving is fun. I'd do it with Bay if I had access to a cart. On the other hand, my pony is bred for it, but I wouldn't want to be in a cart that was strapped to her. ;~D
