Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I'm sorry to hear about your mother. What is the matter? I've been wondering about the horses.
OK. Are they bagging up yet?
Sorry about your mom, hope it's not serious.

No, I don't know what he's allergic to but it seems to be external. He rubs his ears into a bloody mess if I don't catch it in time and give him his steroids. I've put bug repellant in his ears, he wears a fly mask with ears but nothing works 100%. This last time when I caught him itching, he was rubbing his ears on a tree then turned around and started rubbing his bottom. That's when I started him on the spirolina and no more itching of any part of his body. None. It's an amazing difference. I guess spring and summer will be the biggest test, that's when his allergies are the worst.
In the Horse Journal article, it said that when they stopped the herb on their test horses, they went right back to itching in a day or 2.
Case Studies and I spelled spirolina wrong, it's spirUlina.
A 25 year old Morgan gelding suffered from COPD, also known as heaves. He was not doing well with conventional therapy of steroids, antihistamines and bronchodialators and had a poor tolerance for any level of exercise, evidenced by coughing. After being off medications for a week, he was started on spirulina at 20 grams twice a day. Within three days, his owner was riding him again, trot and canter, with no heaving and no coughing. Prior to the spirulina he would be heaving and having uncontrollable coughing after just walking. He also began to again actively play in the field with his buddies.
Another study:
A 10 year old Morgan gelding had hives for the previous two to three months. He showed some response to corticosteroids and antihistamines, but the hives return in full force off medications. We stopped medications for a week and then started spirulina 20 grams twice a day. Hives were gone in 3 days.
There are more if anyone wants me to post them.

Thanks for the information. I am going to try it. I have a lot of respect for herbal medications, especially after having the Arab mare with the tumor. My vet gave us a Chinese herbal medicine and cimedidine to try and it worked wonderfully. One of our mares has skin problems, like hives sort of, that is being controlled with medicated shampoo so I will try it on her also.
Good morning! Hope all is well at your place!
I've had good luck herbals on me but I've never tried them before on an animal. Years ago I used to take a diet pill with ma huang. I lost a ton of weight and was the skinniest I'd ever been in my life. I went from 150 pounds to 99 or so. Everybody told me how sick I looked, the best compliment I've ever gotten. I had to quit taking it because I got pregnant and now it's off the market.
No, no changes that I can see. I really don't expect anything until next week.
Mama is doing o.k., thanks for asking. She had bronchitis as well as some small strokes. She is recovering from the bronchitis and hopefully will be back home with us by Monday.
Glad to here your mom doing ok. Does she live with yall?
Yes, she and my dad moved in about 6 weeks ago when she lost her sight. It's been great having them here, but it's to watch their health deteriorate so fast.
Does anyone have any experience with the Bar Bar A Horse Drinker? I'm looking at them for installation in my back area where I have no electricty for heaters. I would need two, each in a fence line for two paddocks.
My husband and I like to watch "big truck" shows. Did anyone see the one on today with the animal rescue rig. I went to their site but couldn't pull up a pic. They went out into an area where horses had been flooded for ten days and strapped them in a body halter and air lifted them by helicopter to higher ground. Then even rescued a few dogs. It was really interesting. Where we used to live there was a rig like this that went out and got cows but they trucked them out.
Horses desperately in need of adoption.

What's the story there? Were they seized from somewhere?
I can't figure out on the site who those folks are and why they have all those pregnant mares and a tight deadline. What's the deal?
They are all Premarin mares in Canada. Adoption fee will include getting them to California.
I don't understand. Someone adopts them and they send them to a farm somewhere? Are they adoptable or looking for donations to save them?
It's not like I have space anyway, but I'm curious... I know about premarin foals, but why are there pregnant mares being dumped? Now is when they'd be using them for the premarin isn't it? and then re-breed the mares, dumping just the foals? Or were these seized from somewhere?
