The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I've seen the saying on license plate holders, bumper stickers, etc. also.

Good Morning!

My oldest daughter's favorite t-shirt says:

"It's only funny 'til someone gets hurt,
then it's hilarious!"

I've had something very interesting happen. Tuffy has baaad allergies, they kick up 2 or 3 times a year and I have to give him a course of steroids over several days. I've been told by 3 different vets that I need to take him to A & M to let them figure out what's causing it. A & M is several hours from where I am and I have 5 kids so packing up a horse and leaving is not an option. I have a subscription to Horse Journal and in my latest edition they are singing the praises of an herb called spirolina in the use of allergies. In their test horses, nearly all should vast improvement while on it, and it worked within 2 or 3 days. I ordered some to have on hand when Tuffy started itching again. Sure enough, I saw him scratching his ears into a bloody mess a few days ago and started him on the herb. I kid you not, by the next day, no more itching. The stuff is a gross, messy, smelly powder so I mixed it with sweet feed and extra molasses in his regular ration of crimped oats and he ate it. Turns his muzzle green and he looks pretty silly until he gets a drink of water but it's well worth it.

That's interesting.

Does it say it work on dogs?

No, but I think that it would. People were the intended target, not horses, and the Horse Journal people decided to try it. Also, I called the place that I bought it from and they assured me it was very safe so if your dog is having problems, I'd definitely try it. I got it at www.herbalcom.com It was delivered quickly and when I called them to ask some questions, they were very nice.

Thanks I'll look into it.

I have a Jack Russell that has allergies bad. I've noticed they really get worse when the grass is wet, which it has been alot lately. I think she is itchy 24/7. Her skin is always so ping/red on her tummy, and she scratches raw places.

My old vet gave me shots to give her. He said they should keep her comfortable for a month, but they only worked for about 2 wks. Since he died I haven't been giving her anything. This may be the ticket.

It would sure be worth a try. The dosage for a small dog would be a tiny amount so it should be easy to sneak in his food. The dosage for a horse is 20 grams twice a day. I only feed once a day and that's why I called the company, to find out if it would be ok to double the dosage for once a day feeding. He said absolutely. I also had to ask how many grams equaled an ounce. He said that 40 grams was approximately an ounce and a half.

I wonder if you can buy it like in Walmart, or a GNC store?

Good question. GNC might have it or any type store that specializes in herbs. Are you near a large city? Most have stores that specialize in herbs.

Yeah, I'm near Tulsa.

If I can't get a small amount to try, I'll order it from the site.

It will be very cost effective for a small dog. 1 pound of the stuff was $13 and some cents. You probably wouldn't give him more than a half teaspoon but be sure and ask, don't take my word for it. Let me know if you find it at a store.

Morning ladies...

I can see clearly now the rain is gone....
(or at least I will when it gets light out)

Sure will:)

The reason I'd like to find a smaller amount is because I would use it so slowly. It would take forever to use up a pound with Susie. Would it loose it's potency? With a horse it makes sense to buy that much.

You know, I didn't ask that question and I should have. I bought 2 pounds, it arrived in 2 dark blue plastic bags. It was soooo messy sticking my hands in that bag that I transferred it to a large butter tub with a lid.

Do you know what he's allergic to? Where did you order the spirolina from? Boy, I want to try this on our stud. He is allergic to just about every kind of feed there is according to the blood tests that were run. He's allergic to alfafa hay, oats, several types of grasses, the list goes on. His only reaction is a snotty nose but the solution per the vet and the testing lab is shots once a day for almost a year, then once a week, once a month, etc. We've just put it off because he'll hate the sight of a human if he gets hit with a shot daily. Boy, I'm glad to hear about this and it's sure worth a try.

Good morning. Sorry I haven't updated lately, but we've been at the hospital with my mom for the past week. The mares haven't popped yet, but they have to be getting close. We'll let you know as soon as something happens.
