Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Then this one horse was able to step higher and bigger than the others and he kept winning with his "big lick" .. so other trainers developed all these unnatural ways to get THEIR horses to step higher and bigger .. and eventually you got something that looks like this:
That's an impressive trot. The woman on there looks like she's trying really hard to sit it, based on the expression on her face.
Wait... that's not a trot.... (There's egg on my face!)
That has to be the most God awful thing I've seen. Worse than pleasure horses with their nose in the ground.
Finally, the sun is shining here. Still 13' this morning coming in but beautiful sunshine.
It's a balmy 28 in this neck of the woods. The air is so cold that it hurts to breath it in!
:) I keep threatening to run away to some tropical island. I don't usually mind the winter and the snow, but we don't usually have this cold last so long. Most winters we'll get some snow and in a couple of days at most, it's melted.
The cold and snow has brought 3 bands of wild horses down into the valley and I love seeing that. Something good did come out of it I guess. One young stud is pure black. Gorgeous :)
Thank you for the pictures. I do like the app and the pinto, and their riders. Yes, first picture is a horse and rider in the wrong class altogether.
And that particular picture is not the most exagerated I've seen. The running walk isn't a bad gait to ride at all, but with them built up and sore, it's not near as nice. And the canter ... well ... just, damn! I rode one(built up and big-licking) once just so I could say I did.. It's awful.. really. IMO.
Where do you live?
Northern Nevada - about 25miles from Carson City.
Oh wow ...
Oh wow! Is there anyway that you can get pictures?
:-)
I'll bring my camera tomorrow morning and if I see him, I'll stop and get a picture. He is just gorgeous. :)
Excellent!
Yeah Cowboy, we were just discussing the TWH show world the other day, and you're right, it IS disgusting. :o(
I think it's because lots of people down in this part of the country call gaiting "hitting a lick", hence the "Big Lick" is what breaking above level is called.
Sorry for the redundant posts. I was catching up and didn't realize that you had already fielded the questions. And quite nicely I might add! :o)
LOL! Even though it's not a trot (probably a pace), it sits about as bad. I've seen 6 or 8 inches of air under the butts of some of the riders at walking horse shows. And heaven help the big busted women. You'd think they'd have 2 black eyes.
Hmm. The rider on the arab is on the wrong diagonal...
