The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I'll have to see what I can find. Don't get mad though if I come back wanting to do weird things to my horses feet and neck:')

I don't know if it was the shots or the vet or both. He only used probably a 24 or 26 gg and very fast. Maybe it burned. She was jumping back after he was done. SL took one look at him and started acting up. She didn't want him messing with her. This boarder and I gave Okie his and we used a much bigger gg and we left the needle in and aspirated back and he never flinched. Funny.

OK here are the pics from the schooling show, just to further our recent conversation about frame and movement and collection. You'll notice that all these are English, and this is a schooling show sow not all are in formal gear. Sorry we didn't stay for Western in the afternoon, but we have been mostly talking about how "low and slow" is particularly inappropriate English. And also sorry that the picture quality is so poor. It's a big arena, far out of range of my flash, so I really had to lighten them to get any image at all, and they come out very very grainy. It's good though, because we can evaluate the frame without really identifying or embarrasing individuals who did not exactly give their permission to be critiqued by us!

First of all, here's a pretty paint and rider, neither of which have been told they are in english tack. Head down on a slack rein.

This horse has a nice natural presence about him, reminded me a little of Harley... All he needs is to be picked up a little and driven forward, he has nice action, but he's in jog-trot mode, not giving the real swinging stride I think he could have.

This is a nice frame I think, on an Arab type.

And I liked this Pinto... if a little above the bit here, having just come up on the rear of these slower guys...

Here is an Appaloosa, who is obviously schooling in dressage, with that forward telescoping arch and great impulsion... Probably too much for hunter, but very appropriate for her dressage tack.

Group shots to get a feel for the rest of the field, the same appy is in the rear in the first pic.

Off topic a little, this was such a pretty little baby... Little snowflake blanket on her rump, probably a long yearling.

Good morning!

Becky, you just described my one and only foray into breeding. I had a QH mare, off the track, that somebody basically gave me. She had fantastic breeding and had won a few races so I had her bred to a good stud in this area, $3000 stud fee. It was her first baby, took forever to get her bred, she had to be on Regumate the entire time. I did get a nice foal, I did have to send him to a trainer, another $2000. I didn't ride him enough and he bucked me off big time. He was bucking like a rodeo horse. I never got my confidence back on him and sold him to a barrel horse trainer in Oklahoma, for $1500. I hated to sell him but I can't afford another pasture ornament and he was too nice of a colt to not have a job.

Anyway, I learned my lesson. If I ever breed again, which is unlikely, I'd do alot of things differently.

Hoo boy, you can sure tell that's a schooling show. I shouldn't be critiquing someones english riding because I'm no good at it, either, but, those riders forms leave much to be desired. Most of them have their feet too far forward, they look like they are sitting in a chair. That first picture looks particularly silly, the low-headed horse, loose rein, hands too high, heels up, legs too far foward and her saddle is too small. She's has alot of stuff to correct, for english pleasure or western pleasure. She'd never make it in dressage.

I think the arab-type horse and rider are the best of the bunch. That loud paint is close but no cigar. His back legs are dragging behind and he's hollow backed. She needs to work at driving him into her hands, getting his legs under him and rounding his back.

The one that you said reminds you of Harley has tons of potential. He looks more rounded than the paint. He needs a better rider or the rider needs a better trainer.

It just demonstrates that you can put a hunting saddle on a western horse.

OK guys, you got a point. Personally, I never did go for that so called hunter/jumper class in AQHA shows, anyway. Those little sissy saddles and all that 'English' apparel. (((((Shudder))))).

Well, the tights don't exactly enhance the male image, but it's the whole getup.

On Saturday, I posted a link to one of the Foundation Quarter horse sites. The whole premise behind these clubs or organizations is to undo what the show ring and the race track (re money) have done to the Quarter Horse. For instance, some of the horses running at the race tracks are only 10% Quarter horse (90% TB). The foundation registries require 90% Quarter Horse to be eligible for foundation registration.

Of course, the show ring has not just effected Quarter Horses. Anybody ever been to the walking horse Celebration in Tennessee? Ever been to the barns and see what they do to prep those horses? Disgusting.

Good Morning

Hair, the App looks closest to what I think Eng. horses should look like. The first is a western pleasure:) That one paint with his head up a bit isn't too bad.

Duchess, yeah we do imprint training as soon as foals are born. I think it makes a world of difference. Probably the only reason I'm ready to try one all the way thru ride training. My mares last foal that we imprinted my daughter broke to ride and she turned out great, that's why I'm trying again:). I think our stud gives his babies a great mind. We have never gotten one before that wasn't very very easy to work with even when we didn't imprint.

Becky

Almost certainly a western pleasure horse with english tack and a passenger. But sooooooooooooooo common.

And ........ Good morning everyone!

We were just talking about that on Friday. It's everywhere, just a little more obvious in the world of the BIG LICK. It's almost comical (in a warped way) to see what lengths people go to to make a horse move just as UNNATURALLY as POSSIBLE!

Is there a reason why that is called "big lick"? I've always wondered about that.

You are right. The appy looks the most normal in english tack.

very true.... I wasn't going to start on riders ;~D

There is perhaps not enough equitation in pleasure classes, lots of incorrect form gets overlooked, even in the rated shows.

I can't find any documentation on that, but probably because it's BIG.. lol.

Really, I'm trying not to be sarcastic, I think they just started calling it that because it got bigger and bigger.

I liked watching the appy go too, a little dressage training shows.

And I don't have a real good picture that shows how pretty that loud pinto was moving. She's a little above the bit and hollow in that pic (though not as hollow as she looks, she's white across the back) It was just unfortunate timing for the pic, because she was going like gangbusters till she ran into the tails of those other two horses. It was a mistake to end up trapped there, she should have passed them. :~D
