Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
The pop ups are attacking! I have adware which cleans up about 100 a day. I have Mcafee which is stopping a lot. They are all from MSN/microsoft and hit fron 5 to 20 or so at a time. Sometimes so many that I have to reboot.

Heather and I rode for nearly 2 hours yesterday. I really enjoyed it but could tell it had been awhile since I'd been on a horse.

We have an Arabian gelding and a Red Rohn gelding. We are also leasing a POA mare.
All three children do 4H.
But my son is losing interest in showing horses wants something a little more exciting.
He tried team penning the last few weekends. If he likes it (AND wants to stick with it) we will need to get him a different horse.
My kids team penned for years, my daughter still does occasionally. It's a fun event, and the best thing about it is you don't have to have a "specially" trained horse, like with roping horses. They just need to know go, stop, turn....Oh, and not be afraid of cows:)

My son's roping horse is afraid of cows:) He's ok with them if he's behind them, but let one turn and face him....
The funny thing is, his bloodlines are all "cowhorse". Shows how much bloodlines will tell you:). But he is a great roping horse, just has to have a good pilot aboard.

Oh, I didn't mean that a horse can't be trained for penning, just that if some one has a horse that is good on the basics you can pretty much pen on one. The more you pen on them, the more the horse will learn what to do on it's own. But like roping and barrell, jumping horses etc. Before they can compete require some training. They don't just back up into the box, they dont just stay till there when the cow is let out, they don't naturally track a cow, they don't naturally (in the case of team roping) turn and face the cow when the heeler has caught, or calf roping horses back up after the rider has bailed to keep the rope taut. Those are all things that have to be trained into the horses.
A lot of people buy roping horses to pen on. That doesn't necessaily work, as a roping horse is trained to NOT pass a cow, where as in penning sometimes you do have to get in front of one. A really good roping horse is hard to pen on at first, and penning can mess up thier roping training.
The best horses for penning are the ones that just will go easy, stop and turn fast. That is all just basic training, not specialty, and any rider can do it. Like I say the horse will get better after doing it alot.

Penning is great to do with a barrel horse, a nice change. Helps to keep them from burning out on barrels.

Good morning, and welcome to the saddle club thread! We're a varied bunch here, my husband and I have an Arab, an Arab mustang cross, a pony, and we just ride trail now. I did all the show stuff when I was younger, Arab shows and jumping. There aren't a lot of guys that dig the show stuff, it doesn't surprise me that your boy would rather do the cowboy stuff :~D
We'd love to see pics of yours, there are pics of ours here and there throughout the thread. We love pictures!

I just got back from the grocery store. I'm kind of excited. Guess what they had there?
Stick horses:). I bought one for JP for Christmas. It's black with a white blaze, and when you squeeze his ear it plays the William Tell Overture, clip clops and whinnys. I never see these things except at rodeos when they have stick horse races for the kids.
