Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
It's worth a try. I don't mind cleaning the mold off of my tack but I have alot of leather stuff and it would take me a week to clean it all.
Morning.
Becky
One white foot - buy him.
Two white feet - try him.
Three white feet - deny him.
Four white feet and a white nose,
Cut off his head and feed him to the crows.
. . . not that I would EVER do that, of course . . . < g >
I used to have a horse with four white feet AND a white star and snip. His feet did seem to be softer.
My mare has just a white coronet on her off hind foot. But if she loses a shoe, it's always on that foot, and if she's a little "off", it's always on that foot. She gets Source and minerals and that seems to help; when we first got her, we couldn't keep a shoe on that foot.
That old saying was said in True Grit:)

I can quote True Grit word for word. My all-time favorite movie.
"you afraid of the dark?"
"I've never been afraid of the dark."
"If I had a big horse pistol like that I wouldn't be afraid of no booger man".
I think that genetic problems in animals are often linked to a color gene also. It seems to happen more often than not that bad feet are white feet. The gene for white causes several problems, the lethal white in horses, in cats, white and blue eyes - deafness, there is a genetic problem in dalmations also, related to the white but I can't remember what it is :)
We're having a heat wave :) - it was 17' this morning when I got in to work. Well it beats the 7' of yesterday. No precipitation though, that's nice. I think it's too cold for snow.
I think I've heard that movie a 100 times. Hubby watches the western channel most evenings.
we haven't been down to 17' yet, but I bet that we will soon. It's actually rather warm for this time of year.
I bred and showed Siamese cats for years - they have blue eyes but not completely white coloring; still they do seem to have a number of genetic problems that are peculiar to Siamese. The gene that produces the color in Siamese creates a pigment that is temperature sensitive, which is why their extremities (which are cooler) are darker than everything else, and their tummies and chests are lighter than their backs. One of my cats likes to nap with her head over one of the floor registers - her mask has turned a mottled sort of tortie color from the constant heat.
I'm sorta hoping for a real heat wave here, 70' would be nice. :) Realistically, probably several months before I see that. We are setting record cold temperatures here though.
I did not know they were temperature sensitive. I have a feral cat (one of four) that has the markings of a siamese or burmese except that her nose is mottled with calico. Her back darkens during the winter and then lightens up during the summer. I thought she'd just been around appaloosas too long.
It's funny that you mention that coz I've wondered if the same thing happens in roan horses that have dark points like mine. They sort of remind me of Siamese cats. I've even called 'em Siamese horses before. They have such a marked color change between summer and winter and I wonder if it's temperature related. Bob is almost white in the body in the summer and almost black in the winter. It's weird.
I denied her noon meal out and pastured her butt.
Off subject here, but I just got to looking at the BareButted Cowboy thread. I happen to have pictures, check it out...

Not a bad lookin' Quarter Horse there!
Don't think he's a cowboy :) Tan lines in the wrong places.
I'll peek later. Hubby looking over my shoulder:')
