The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Oh, you would love it. Imagine all the people you'd meet and the places you'd see. And the neat reports we'd be getting here. :)

The app your friend Bob is riding looks like a ghostwind stallion. Ask him someday what the breeding of his horse is.

I'll ask.... is 'ghostwind' a particular stallion or a line of a type of horses?

Legend of Indians regarding the receipt of stallions from Russian ships, and believed sacred and special. They were called the Ghost Wind Stallions. The ghost wind appearance apparently only shows up rarely, only in horses from that line, and only in colts. Siri Sheik was supposedly a descendant. They are described as "...having lightening or varnish strips on the cheek bones of the face, with dark stockings or legs. The skin of the body was silver white. George stated that every Ghost Wind Stallion, that he had ever seen, had from two to four or a hand of spots on the left side only. They had mottled skin around the muzzle, anus and scrotum and the hair of the horse was like fur. The tribe described the horses as being wild, in the sense that no one owned them. Perhaps a better word than owner, would be a cartaker or a custodian." The Story of The Ghost Wind Stallions, by Don LaLonde, pages 14-15

Not everyone (as a matter of fact, most don't) believes that the Appaloosa came from Russia. It's a legend that caught my attention years ago, and the words of the old indian telling it ring true.

Legends are interesting, sometimes regardless of whether they are verifiable or true!

Good Morning all!

I have a question: Anybody else having trouble with mold on their tack? It has been so wet here for several weeks that some of my leather tack is growing mold! I keep it in a tack room with an air conditioner so the summer heat doesn't dry out the leather and now I'm thinking I need a dehumidifier in there. I've never had this problem before.

Good morning....

Leather would always mold out in the barn here in damp country, summer or winter. We keep our tack in the house.

I have to keep an eye on my stuff here. Things will mold (or rust) fast here too. Probably all the rain you are having.

I get mold on my tack all the time. I always thought that it was the nature of the beast. But once I clean it, the leather is no worse for wear.

I've been doing housework this mornng. Yuk. Moving furniture....again:). We ran a track on the transfers and they won't be here till Thurs, so I thought this would be a good opprotunity to get the house cleaned up good for Christmas. Sat. everyone will be here to make capaletti, so I needed to straighten anyway, and figure a place for the tree.

It's raining here again, and cold.
Becky

I've got a similar problem myself. I don't have any trouble with feeding but I've got a filly that's 18 months old that's STILL not completely weaned. It's the most aggrivating thing I've ever seen! I took her away for a month and her mama dried up but as soon as I brought her back, darned if she didn't go back to nursing and her mama let her. So then I had a spikey noseband made and strapped it to her halter but the the leather the spikes were mounted in got soft and the spikes started to lay over and she figured out how to hold her head so she didn't stick her mom. I finally just gave up. I haven't seen her nurse lately so she may finally be weaned, but her mom is due to foal again in April and I know she needs to be bagging up for the new baby. Do they stop giving milk at some point when they have a baby (Ha!) by their side in preparation for the new one. I mean, what do wild horses do? Coz they have babies EVERY year.

I've been reading the posts and wondering the same thing the last couple of weeks. I figure there must be a reason but horses having babies long before man started weaning them:')

I've been watching two mares with foals that look big enought to eat on their own. The babies look about the same age. One wanders all over the place and the momma runs him away when he tries to nurse. The other mare walks away from hers. The baby won't follow at first but when he does he takes the exact same path and walking around obstacles as momma does. After he catches her, she lets him nurse awhile and then gently kind of walks off again. Both doing it completely different but both weaning, I guess.
