The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Young Guns is another hysterical movie.
Did you see the size of that chicken??

I don't unless they have a serious case of thrush. Copper-Tox is the big guns, I usually use Thrush Remedy, it's not so strong. (and it doesn't stain or stink as bad, either)

It stinks awful, and is the worst case for Kermit the Frog green! :-D We used to use it now and again to seal the horses's feet if it was really really wet and muddy for a long period of time.

Ouch.

I bought a bareback pad from a lady in Canada and I was fussing about it being 45 degrees here. She said it was 20 below with a wind chill that took it down to about 40 below. Boy, did I feel stupid.

You can't get rid of that smell, either. When I've used it before then had to leave to pick my kids up from school, they always knew the minute they got in the car what I'd been doing.

I don't think that we get to 40 below but it will drop 10 to 15 below sometimes. Last winter was pretty bad with the windchill. The temp. frequently dropped below zero. I hope that it's warmer this year. I'd say it's in the low 50s to mid 40s right now. Supposed to be in the 60s through thanksgiving. I'll be going up to Maine on Friday, and I'll bring back pictures. They probably have snow. We got some last week or the week before, but it's gone now.

It'll eat a hole in your clothes too!

I like to use just plain ol' iodine or bleach.

I found a picture of Grace. She's the one in the foreground. Her gray was coming in pretty well even then. The baby is Hope, born on may 26th sometime after midnight, just on the other side of that overgrown fence. This picture was taken about 5:30am so she was just a few hours old. The mama is Bluebell and you can tell she doesn't appreciate Grace's curiosity.

Really? I didn't know that! It stains pretty bad, but I've never had it eat anything.

Maybe it was something else, but I always assumed that was what it was. Something ate a hole in my pants!

I just got an email requesting permission to use the pictures of some of my horses on my website in a game - Hurricane Farms SIM Horse Club. Has anyone heard of this game or know what it's about? Their website is http://hfshc.com but all I find out there is that it's closed to new members.

I have a horse pasture in the California foothills 50 miles
east of Sacramento. Anyone have any experience with horses
eating acorns? It's a big problem here because we've had drought conditions and all the grass has been eaten off the
pasture.

This looks like a great game for young people.

Hurricane Farms SIM Horse Club, or HFSHC, is quite possibly the leading SIM game on the internet today, with nearly 500 members and endless possibilities for people of all ages. HFSHC is a club designed to educate members while they participate in enjoyable activities, and is structured to be as realistic as possible in a SIM game. With a constant goal to achieve the best technologies and competition, HFSHC includes an online banking system, constant activity on the message board, and shows for every kind of horse. Hurricane Farms is intended for members 13 and up, with many members into their twenties and beyond. This is a game for people who truly love horses, whether they own them or not in real life, and is the perfect place to live out your most incredible equine dreams!

I wish I could help you but I never have had horses eat acorns that I know of. When I lived in NC there were a lot of black jack oaks with acorns all over but always had plenty of grass.

I do think deer eat them but I don't know. Don't they have a lot of tanic acid?

It's ceramic tile in the kitchen. My SIL is laying it down for me (got to get rent out of them somehow). Carpet would not be as hard to tear up, as the linoleum was. I thought of wood, but with 2 dogs, 6 cats, and 5 people in this house, I thought better of it. I think they know me on a first name basis at Home Depot..lol With the winter weather coming, it's a good time to get those inside projects done.
