The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I'd like to have a foal in June, if I had to.... best situation here, best grass, less spring rain, warm temps.

As long as we're not showing juveniles... it wouldn't matter a lot.

We had a neighbor who had a buckskin that got a bad case of rain rot on his butt. When they got it cleared up and the hair grew back it was white. After that he got mistaken for an App all the time.

The few times I've had to deal with it, I just poured some iodine into some shampoo, cheaper then the stuff you buy, soap them up good and let it stand on them for about 5 minutes then rinse. 2-3 days in a row. If you catch it soon enough the hair folicle shouldn't be damaged.

I like anywhere from late April to mid June. Best grass, less flies, less heat, less cold:)

I am harboring a possibility of breedin Cyn some year so ecurbh can see that and experience raising one.

She has a great temperament to pass on and might be a great momma. We could breed her Arab and get a registerable foal, but a Quarter Horse might be a better match to give the baby more width and size.

When I was growing up my horse had free choice to stay in or go out. She did stand in the rain sometimes. duhhhhh We had a horrible storm once, with golfball size hail, and she wouldn't go in the barn. It was a tin barn and the hail sounded like gunshots. She was running and screaming and the neighbors horses were running and screaming. My mother and I were at the window watching, screaming and crying. Still upsets me when I think about it. I ALWAYS bring my horses in when I know there is a storm approaching.
No lasting injuries on the horses, amazingly enough.

Mine are the same way about their lean-to. They won't go in when it is raining or hailing because it's so loud in there it scares them. The barn is a tin roof too, but it's got a liner in it that deadens the sound, and I think they also just get used to it because they ~cant~ run out.

LOL If you think of the name of the movie, post it to me. Sounds like a good one. Reminds me of "Blazing Saddles".

Mine hate to be penned in. They like it better if they can come and go as they please. My boys have the end of an old commercial chicken house at my in-law's to get in. They stand in there alot in the summer when the flys are so bad, and when it's cold and windy too. If it's just raining, they'd rather be outside, unless it's just pouring. I need to fix up something similar for the mares at the other barn but I need to get a load of gravel delivered first. The side entrance is just a huge mudhole.

Mine spend more time in too during the summer, to get away from the flies.

Yeah, I think they recommend iodine shampoo, but I'm not sure how often. You should also do all your brushes because it can be transfered from horse to horse on them. But it's usually not a problem if you horse is deeply groomed on a regular basis.

Oh, I forgot about that. I do bring them in on super hot days, my barn roof is insulated, each stall and the barn aisle have fans and it has a fly spray system. I think they are more comfortable in there when it's over 100.

I've used that shot before too. I think it's called Leutalyse. The first time I used it, if the vet hadn't told me what to expect, I would've been concerned. They pop out in a wringing wet sweat within 5 or 10 minutes. It's really weird. I guess it's like MEGA hot flash. I was having trouble getting this particular mare bred. She was 8 and had never had a foal. I had her cultured and she had an infection. We ended up having to infuse her with Gentamycin for 3 days in a row, then give the shot. It worked like a charm and I haven't had trouble with her since.

Yeah, it is scary the first time you use it. Luckily the reaction doesn't last but a few minutes.

The first time I used it on my mare it worked good. The second time, she did get pregnant, but sometime thru that winter she lost it.

I was glad this time we didn't have to use it. I don't know if the shot had anything to do with her losing it, but I feel better NOT having to go that route, but was going to if she didn't get pregnant soon this past year.

Speaking of white hairs, my oldest gelding has, just this year, come up with these weird little white hair patches on either side of his throat, in that little groove right behind the jaw. They're about the size of a quarter. He's been vaccinated for strangles the last few years and as far as I know, there's not been an abcess there and the glands there aren't swollen. Anybody got any ideas?

I would have no idea. Any change in the skin there?

Nope, just the white hair. Strangles was my first thought, but like I say, no abcess. I wonder if the vaccination actually gave him a mild case of it.

Take some pictures of that... if the skin's been healthy and he hasn't had an injury there, I can't imagine...
