The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

The more people that moved here the more I was considering moving out:), but now with the no water thing, and the no ambition for that major of an upheaval:), we'll probably stay. Besides everything here is paid for.

I've been reading the posts on the GWTW thread.

Morning, are you referring to Gone with the Wind? If so, would you please post the link? It's my favorite movie. Thanks. :)

Georgeous Appaloosas. Nice and stocky. We have been so busy at home, painting, paneling, and laying new floor, that I am just getting caught up with the threads.

Well, mud that dries up quick after it stops is good.

We're still getting very little rain. I know it will come, but my drainage ditch looks like a silly thing to do when it's dry all the time! ;~D

Did you see the post over the weekend that we got together and took those troops out for pizza and pints? Had a really good time. (HH-2,914)

Oh my gosh, it's wet out there! Rain, rain and more rain! Horses didn't waste any time getting into their nice dry stalls.

When my kids are grown I'll be too old to move. I'm going to be 43 next month and my youngest is 5.

I'd like to think they appreciate being put in when it's nasty... I think it's good for them anyhow, but maybe I do it for me as much as them. ;~D

I'm sure most of the things I do for my horses is more for my peace of mind than theirs. I have a system: If it's cold and rainy, 40 degrees or lower, they stay in. If it's a bad storm, with lightning and hail, they stay in. If it's very cold and windy, and I mean cold like below freezing, I'll bring them in. I rarely blanket them. I did alot of research on this since one of my neighbors starts blanketing their horses at 60 degrees. Horses can withstand temperatures down to 30 below zero if they are dry and out of the wind. My neighbor is a doofus.

From what I have learned, horses handle the cold good, and the wet, but the cold wet gets too them. I rarely blanket until March, and that's only to help rub the winter coat off.

My horses have free choice to go in or out. It use to drive me nuts that they would stand out in the snow or cold wind when they could go in if they choose. Now I just don't worry about it. They've made their choice, they can deal with it:)

Here we get som bitter cold, but longer periods of constant wet. They can take a period of rain, I think they do less well when they can never dry out for weeks. They get rain rot here if left out. I pamper mine with blankets when it starts to drop below fifty.... into the forties, and I make sure they get in to dry out at night on days they've been wet all day.

By all means! Be my guest. What prompted me to think of that was a movie I saw, a comedy western I think, where this old guy died at his favorite cathouse and the undertaker had a hard time getting the grin off his face. It was a sight gag and quite funny. The undertaker would straighten the grin out and it'd pop right back on there.

With as much rain as we have had here, and the warmer temps. I've been watching for rain rot. We don't have that much, but it does happen. It can be a real pain when it's colder and you have to bathe one.

Some friends of mine actually plan for fall foals. The flys are gone, the weather's cooler but still warm. If you're not into showing or racing, it really might be a better time of year. I've never done it that way myself. I'm always too paranoid about them not 'sticking' and needing the extra time for another breeding. My mares tend to stop cycling this late in the year but I think you can keep them going with artificial lights.

Still LOL...Mack and I are sitting here laughing and saying if you can get a corpse to smile, let it smile:). I told him I'd have the undertaker put a big grin on his face.

Still LOL....thinking of the reaction of people strolling by a casket where the person is grinning big....:), be worth having an open casket just to see.

My pony has telltale white hairs right at root of her mane, down her back and at the top of her tail that I think is scarring from rain rot before we had her... I've never had one actually get it, so I don't even know what is involved. Bathing with medicated soaps?

I think for a late foal, you should consider the climate where your at, JMO.

If you missed my post, there is a shot the vet can give a mare to bring her into season. I've done it with good results.
